When you see "fantastic salary" on an advert. All joking aside not putting a salary is one of the major reasons for candidates not applying for a role, so where possible put the salary information in there, otherwise you are going to miss candidates. 5 pro tips for you non-salespeople thrown into a salary negotiation (and btw most of you are NOT doing #5): 1. You’re not at a car dealership, so you do NOT need to go into it like a battle. That’s off-putting and will usually NOT help you get more money. 2. In most cases I’ve seen, the money is defined by the rest of the offer, so focus on those additional job perks- add or remove those to get to a salary that works for both of you. 3. Transparency about another offer can be a great way to establish leverage and illuminate the state of the job market. Tread carefully to avoid coming off as accusatory! 4. Remember that the convincing side of things is DONE. Once you’re talking through an offer, the days of talking through your accomplishments are OVER. Focus on job market, benefits, and additional offers. 5. Above all, speak honestly and using a “matter of fact” tone throughout. It’s 2 sides educating each other, so be sure to treat the other person with respect throughout!
