writer-for-hire ✍ recruitment, candidate & people experience comms | employer branding | punchy brand voices
Wanna know the secret to writing punchy job ads people actually want to read (and then read to the end where your APPLY button is)? After yesterday's post highlighting the notorious recruiter rhetoric that's inducing sleepy eye rolls and scrolls, you should have a firm grasp of what *not* to do. Try this instead 👇 1️⃣ Write in a conversational tone - that is how you'd tell your 12 year old (or your grandma or your ma). Write to second person POV ('you') and keep those sentences SHORT and rhetoric/jargon free 🤮 2️⃣ Make them feel special - use your target audience's language to share anecdotes and inside industry jokes, and appeal to their career/life painpoints and desires, so that when they read your copy they think, 'Wow. This was written FOR ME.' 3️⃣ Find your flow - that is, go easy on the bullet points, eh? No more than 5 per section and keep them at one line 🫠 Write a few complete sentences that help your candidate move through seamlessly, building anticipation and interest as you go. 4️⃣ Be clear on your values and purpose for the role in your org - if you just need someone reliable to punch data, so be it. But if your employees like knowing how and why they're giving you two thirds of their young lives, sell it. 5️⃣ Give 'em what they want! - that is, *What's In It For Me?* Most job ads I read merely spew details and demands AT candidates. WIIFM flips the script and gets you thinking about Why would a candidate even care? What can we give them that they desperately need that no one else does? What would make ME click APPLY right now? So, the secret's out. That is, there's no ONE secret to writing punchy job ads. There's a series of things you can and should be doing differently to pack a punch and this is just the tip!
