During our Global Meeting in Panama City, we sat down with Renee Arrington, NACD.DC, Vice Chair, Americas of IIC Partners, and President & COO of Pearson Partners International to discuss board search assignments. Renee shared some incredible insights that we will share over the coming weeks. Here is the first question we asked: What do you look for in first-time board candidates? "I look for a couple of things. Firstly, what experience does that candidate have with a board of directors? Do they report to that board? Have they attended and presented at meetings? So, what's their experience base in terms of their current employer's board? Secondly, have they taken the opportunity to gain any board governance certifications? There are many organizations that offer such certifications. For example, the National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD) has a certified directorship program. The Private Directors Association and 50/50 Women on Boards also offer board readiness training. Lots of groups provide such training. And then thirdly, do they have any references from CEOs with whom or for whom they've worked over the years that say, "Hey, this candidate really is board ready"?" Thank you, Renee Arrington, NACD.DC, and the team at Pearson Partners International (IIC Partners: Dallas), for participating! #boardsearch #boards #leadership #executivesearch

Presidential competencies extend beyond the CEO of an institution. Current and aspiring leaders could benefit from a review of these results. My takeaways: empathy, resilience, team building, courage, integrity, and insight/awareness (both self and others) with an eye toward equity will have a lasting positive impact on our colleges and universities.
Our presidential competencies report is out. Our researchers, Kevin R. McClure and Jorge Burmicky, Ph.D., surveyed over 700 current presidents, held focus groups, and reviewed hundreds and hundreds of open-ended responses for this study. Here are my personal takeaways- * We only hire imperfect people, so we must continuously support our college and university presidents after they take office with professional development and renewal * Emotional intelligence is being called out as a core competency * We say we want data-informed decision-makers, but we have to do a better job of defining that and making sure presidents have data resources * In these challenging times, presidents are renewing their focus on building and sustaining the people around them, particularly their cabinet I would be remiss not to thank our colleagues at the American Academic Leadership Institute, the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU), and the Council of Independent Colleges. The Power of Effective Corporate Governance A high-performing board of directors can provide invaluable insights and strategies for executive leadership while promoting shareholders’ best interests. Companies should integrate effective boards to tackle strategic issues like succession planning, talent retention, enterprise risk management, and innovation, beyond just financial health. The Construction Industry Round Table (CIRT) partnered with FMI to explore these aspects in their report, “The Untapped Potential of Corporate Governance in Engineering & Construction" Key findings highlight the significance of board leadership, demographic diversity, training gaps, and strategic priority setting. Key Takeaways: 1. Leadership Matters: Effective board leadership is crucial for overall board effectiveness. 2. Different Is Better: Diverse board compositions enhance governance. 3. The Big Training Gap: Investing in board leadership training is essential but often overlooked. 4. Reordering the Priorities: Boards should focus on strategic rather than operational issues. At The Board Curators, we unlock the mystery, provide practical knowledge, curate board readiness and enable connections required for senior leaders to ascend to the next level of corporate leadership and governance.
