I visited my first art school recently! Rhode Island School of Design, better known as RISD (pronounced rizz' dee). It was such a fun experience to see what goes on at a selective art school. I was pretty blown away to learn about all of the cool things the students are doing, and all of the majors they can choose from. My favorite part of the tour was connecting with a student I know and getting a behind- the-scenes look at their major, industrial design. Some facts about RISD: -There are 16 art majors, and you spend 2/3 of your time on campus in studio. The most popular major is illustration, industrial design is growing in popularity. -There are studio spaces for students everywhere, including in the housing buildings. -Professors are professional artists. -You take the same foundational art curriculum as everyone else your first year. That means that your portfolio submissions should consist of a wide range of materials and techniques, as they want to see an artist who takes risks and has a broad skill set. -RISD students can take courses at Brown (right next door) via cross-registration. In fact, there is also a RISD-Brown dual degree program with a BA at Brown and a BFA at RISD. As you can imagine, this program is highly competitive. -They have a nature lab. This was the highlight of the tour for me! Students can check out all sorts of specimens to study - from bugs to plants to bones! -The culture is collaborative (students work on projects together), and students also spend a lot of time critiquing each others' work to prepare for being professionals. #RISD #artschools #collegesanduniversities #collegetours

Absolutely fascinated by a recent visit to a museum where I discovered that people from the Han Dynasty over 2200 years ago used kitchen storage products that are strikingly similar to what we use today! It's incredible to see the wisdom of the ancients in action. Many so-called "new discoveries" and "innovative designs" are actually solutions to specific pain points faced by people, proving that truly great products stand the test of time and remain relevant through the ages. Let's continue to draw inspiration from history and create products that solve real problems. Juan Carlos Noguera is an industrial designer and an assistant professor at the Rochester Institute of Technology. He receives a Vilcek Prize for Creative Promise in Design—a $50,000 award—for his use of design as a tool to empower accessibility and equity. Public art and the name of your baby should be reviewed with a class of junior high kids before you make a final decision. Here's why👇 I walked past the MLK Jr. statue over Thanksgiving while visiting #Boston. It was the first time I had seen it since its public release and all of the discussion around it. From all angles, it truly is as an awful representation of a pretty amazing person. So what went wrong? 1️⃣ A blind eye to a distracting flaw. Public art will be publicly consumed for decades. Junior high kids will probably give you a more honest immediate reaction compared to a potential echo chamber of others involved in the approval process. Sometimes brutal honesty is the best feedback you can get early on. 2️⃣ Public art is not experienced in isolation. There was a missed opportunity to celebrate MLK Jr. with his true likeness and dignity along side other statues of importance down the corridor of Boston Common, Public Garden, and the Comm Ave. statues. George Washington sits tall on his bronze horse across the way in the Public Garden on a granite pedestal. There is a bronze relief depicting a scene commemorating the 300th anniversary of the founding of Boston across the park on Spruce st. I would argue it would be a bold statement to have MLK Jr. standing tall, his clear likeness on display amidst these other statues and memorials. 3️⃣ Don't let your creativity become the central point of a bigger goal. As creatives we have the difficult task of walking the line between connecting with our ends users/consumers, and creating new and enjoyable experiences. But the goal should still be focused on the person consuming your output. This statue is simply unrecognizable. The creativity of the artist has obscured the person it is celebrating. #publicart #design #userexperience

Had this photo of the newish Ideas Lab at JCU come up on my social media feed. It came days after hearing that the university is going to have its fourth round of redundancies in about a decade; and also that degrees one might think central to the 21st century are facing the axe (eg, planning). Nothing against the architects nor the photographer whose work I know and value. The latter’s moody black and white photos of the Brutalist buildings at the JCU Townsville campus are supremely well-crafted and make us look at these buildings anew. But have things gone too far in treating campuses as materials for university marketing images? Do designers and other creative professionals have a role to play in questioning the shift to seeing university buildings as part of a ‘brandscape’? And what’s the point of having an aesthetically-conceived Ideas Lab if you don’t have the staff or degrees to help generate ideas? And since these are public universities what do our legislators think about the priorities of current university management? I’m all for the importance of aesthetics (indeed, it’s one of the main things I write about); but we really should be debating these issues. #architecture #universities #campus #branding #photography #creativeindustries #publicpolicy #style #substance
