📢 WCCI 2024: Paper Development Workshop (PDW)! The purpose of the PDW is to provide the mentoring program’s participants the opportunity to hear from and engage with the editorial team(s) from the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society flagship journals. The focus of the PDW is for potential authors to learn about paper development for publication in top journals and get hands-on feedback on their own papers. Application to attend the PDW is REQUIRED, i.e., mentees are NOT automatically invited to the PDW. In order to apply, mentoring program participants are required to submit a draft journal paper (which may be based on their accepted conference paper). To apply to the PDW, please register by 24 May 2024. Successful applicants will be notified by 14 June 2024. The PDW will last for two to three hours and is tentatively scheduled for the first day of the conference but the date will be confirmed closer to the conference. 🔗Learn more: https://lnkd.in/eUn7mp4r #WCCI2024 #PaperDevelopmentWorkshop #PDW #CIS #IEEE #ComputationalIntelligenceSociety

Dear community, it might be a tough question for Friday afternoon and the beginning of the year. However, I trust the power of curiosity. While being busy with my Master's Thesis (Abschlussarbeit) for the #EMBA at #ESMT, I came across the very recent research work "Modified Mamdani-fuzzy inference system for predicting the cost overrun of construction projects" by Yaman Saeid Al-Nahhas, Laith A. Hadidi, Muhammad Saiful Islam, Martin Skitmore, and Ziyad Abunada, published in #AppliedSoftComputingJournal in January this year. ⁉And here comes the question to the members of the #construction and #developers community. Have you ever encountered the use of a Modified Mamdani-fuzzy inference system in the construction industry? Or, perhaps you have come across other mathematical modelling techniques in predicting costs and schedule overruns in your projects? I would greatly appreciate any insights you can share. Thank you in advance, and I look forward to engaging in an in-depth discussion.

The key takeaway in this Masterclass is that academics currently seem to publish to convey ideas mainly, but not to demonstrate how the ideas can be truly used to solve significant problems. This publishing masterclass clarifies five main pathways for adding value to academia, public services, industry sectors and wider society, through research, integration of knowledge, applications and teaching - the RIAT Fabric in Higher Education. These pathways generate some 31 contributions to knowledge (CsTK) in Corporate Academia, instead of 3-5 in Traditional Academia. We note that part of the reasons developing countries are where they're are is that the most portent workforce in these countries - academics, students and graduates - typically exhibit not more than 5 criteria of originality and CsTK in their publications. These limited contributions are focused more on the R remit of the RIAT Fabric. Hence, majority of conventional academics in the world today are not integrally excellent, principally because for promotion to senior cadres they've been mainly incentivised to write and talk about instead of to truly solve problems. To fix this problem requires new understandings and paths to impact and CsTK. The understandings and paths to CsTK that we explore in this Masterclass and the number of CsTK they engender are summarised below. 1. The fundamental Research Methods Canvas and 7 CsTK 2. The Sweetpot Principle for identifying significant problems to explore regarding core knowledge production remits like the RIAT Fabric in Higher Education 3. The Oselux Vision and its anatomy into 17 CsTK 4. The Sevenfold Ways in Corporate Academia and 7 CsTK as opposed to Threefold Ways in Traditional Academia 5. The Common Standards for Writing Highly Publishable and Impactful Papers, related research monographs and superbooks which manifest these CsTK. This is arguably the most composite plan today for writing papers, research monographs and superbooks in different fields, albeit with slight modifications from field to field. We'll provide supporting pre-reads on these ideas as well as a full case study of how the Common Standards are used. Registration Link: https://lnkd.in/epef7GQG See you at the Masterclass. #academic #research #pathwaystoimpact #corporateacademia #academia #riatfabric #oseluxvision #sevenfoldways #researchmethods #sweetpotprinciple #publishing #masterclass

How do we support social sustainability and inclusion through innovation and design? And how do we teach students to do so and increase their understanding of universal design? An answer to this challenge is the Universal Design Playbook. The Universal Design Playbook is an online tool that helps coordinate a plan for carrying out design activities. In this book chapter, Dagny Valgeirsdottir, Thomas Skovgaard and John Paulin Hansen describe the purpose and functions of the Universal Design Playbook as well as their first experiences of using it in teaching. The chapter is a part of the anthology “Universal design: Cross-disciplinary perspectives in theory and practice” from the Bevica Foundation’s interdisciplinary research network. You can read it here: https://lnkd.in/d5CNHzvS #UniversalDesign

✨ Have a look at the #Resource "Impact: Definitions, How to manage it, A case study", jointly produced by IETI: Impact-oriented Public Engagement and the Berlin School of Public Engagement and Open Science! More information and download link below. 👇
✨ Have a look at our #Resource "Impact: Definitions, How to manage it, A case study". Download link: https://lnkd.in/dTmt65sU 🔍 What can you find in it? This tool contains an overview of relevant impact definitions (inputs, outputs, #Outcomes, impact(s), indicator), a short introduction to the #LogicModel and how it can be used to plan, monitor and assess impact, and a #CaseStudy (National Education Nature Park, Natural History Museum) as a concrete example of how logic models can be used to manage the impact of a #PublicEngagement initiative. ⚙️ How was this tool developed? This tool is informed by impact literature, as well as impact and public engagement practice. It draws on the experiences and lessons learned by the IETI, BSoPE and National Education Nature Park teams through the development, delivery and attendance of impact trainings, workshops or masterclasses. 👀 Take a look and share your thoughts in the comments: 💡 What is your understanding of outputs, outcomes or impact(s)? 💡 Have you used the logic model to manage the impact of your public engagement? If so, what was your experience? How did it help you to plan, monitor and assess impact? 🙏 Many thanks to Laura Jacklin from the Natural History Museum for sharing the logic model of the National Education Nature Park as a case study. Very relevant to show the impact of public engagement led by another natural history museum! 🙌 This tool has been produced jointly by the projects IETI: Impact-oriented Public Engagement and Berlin School of Public Engagement and Open Science (BSoPE), both hosted by the Public Engagement and Impact Unit of the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin. With: Dr Ana I. Faustino, Victoria Shennan, Jana Wendler, Mhairi Stewart, Sonja Hammann, Zinaida Vasilyeva, Dr Alina Loth, Beeke Bartelt, Vivian Pinheiro, Nina Borchmann and Paula Zwolenski. Bevica Fonden A new article on Universal Design is published today. Herriott, R. (2023) The relation of design tools to universal design theory. Journal of Accessibility and Design for All Volume 13, Issue 2. (CC) JACCES, 2023. ISSN: 2013-7087 . Abstract: Are researchers in Universal Design (UD) using UD theory? There is a link between theory and the appropriate use and selection of tools in design research. On that basis, 256 conference papers from the Cambridge Workshop of Universal Access and Assistive Technology (2002 to 2020) are reviewed for instances of tool use and links to UD and general design theoretical content. From this, it is shown that the instance of explicit tool use can be found in a minority of articles. Those that do have articulated links between the tool of inquiry and theory are classed into four groups, a minority of which are based on UD theory. A recommendation is made for a more explicit explanation of the basis of tool use in research design in order to improve the transparency and comprehensibility of the research design. #design #universaldesign #inclusivedesign #bevicafond
