Quite a week last week: First, celebrating the life and amazing contribution to research and policy of a much loved former colleague Professor Martin Boddy; Secondly, to Manchester, presenting interim findings of fascinating research for the Royal Town Planning Institute on strategic planning, together with Catriona Riddell, Richard Wood, and Stephen Hall. Thirdly, to Munich, talking at the International Association of Planning Law and Property Rights on the age old dilemma of balancing flexibility and certainty in decision making. My three brief take aways (for what they are worth!): 1 – Research matters! It can be a really powerful tool to shape policy and practice in meaningful ways. 2 – Appreciating the people you work with matters! I’m indebted to the guidance and support Martin offered to me over the years. 3 – Conversation matters! I had countless good conversations last week with contacts old and new. Some may lead to new collaborations and endeavours, others offered great intellectual challenges, and importantly, others were simply really nice human interactions about not just planning, politics and policy, but family, place and life! Was reminded recently of this video made during the public consultation of the current National Policy on Architecture. Invited by Conor Sreenan of Grangegorman Development Agency to talk about the policy, the gaps and its potential, I still advocate we need to find a way in which all of the state departments who build (they all do) work in concert to drive quality in design, invent more inclusive ways of procurement and contemplate that in terms of the impact on our everyday lives, architecture is not an outlier, but potentially as fundamental to a healthy, cohesive and just island for all people. https://lnkd.in/exsxQ-tX

The power of partnerships!

A really topical and engaging conference today. Many thanks to the speakers including Mark Skilbeck , Alice Davidson, Dinny Shaw, Matthew Nicholson, Rebecca Clutten, Claire Nevin, Sarah Scannell MRTPI and many more for their insights. My key takeaway? Lots of promising proposals across planning and the residential sector but experienced voices in the industry note that many of these proposals may not necessarily have the immediate impact we need (looking at you new towns) and more is needed! #LDEplanning

Another insightful presentation in the always interesting NORR ed lecture series. Sir David Chipperfield, one the greatest architects of this generation, delivered a truly inspiring and thought provoking talk on the responsibilities of practice. David touches on the power of global investment, not always as a power for good with his own practice moving toward community-based work with social meaning- not the iconic typically associated with high profile architecture. It is interesting to hear Chipperfield admit to form as a willful exercise rather than driven by function. That said I believe context has always defined Chipperfield’s work and set his practice apart from his peers- context establishes the form of each building, blending in and contributing meaning to the building and its surrounds- this makes each building meaningful. It is also interesting to note the practice’s increased interest in building retention and repurposing with minimal, yet innovative interventions on most of their recent work.
