Some really great insights about the central South in this New Local report. 🌟 23 senior decision makers were interviewed, uncovering some interesting research gaps relating to: ▶ The identity of the region and pride in place ▶ Power structures, devolution, and community resilience ▶ Health inequalities ▶ Local skills and (future) labour needs ▶ Economy and placemaking ▶ Infrastructure (transport and housing) "Researchers should be empowered to analyse these gaps in understanding to develop creative and new approaches and solutions. Addressing these priorities presents a significant opportunity for researchers to develop multi-disciplinary teams, align existing research questions to providing substantial practical application and impact, and seek funding through innovative partnerships." The report also shows that "stakeholders were concerned about the how; how can stakeholders achieve their aims, and how can research help them do so? There is a clear need to align the intellectual capacity of local universities to some of the greatest social issues that the region faces." There's ample opportunity for researchers at the University of Southampton and our Civic Partners to engage with these regional challenges. The Centre for the South exists to facilitate this important work and to mobilise knowledge exchange in the central South – do get in touch if you'd like to join this effort.
To learn more about the research behind our six strategic priorities, we have a summary on our website below ⤵ This report contains insights from leaders across many sectors in the central South, and is an interesting read for anyone invested in the wellbeing of the region, particularly policy researchers. It highlights key gaps in research which not only drive the projects we deliver, but act to guide policy research on how to form the best solutions for the area.

EGOS 2025, Athens - Call for short papers (Deadline 7 Jan. 2025) Sub-theme 59: Public and Private Sector Resilience: Creative Action that ‘Goes a Long Way’ through Turbulent Times As the COVID-19 pandemic has shown, resilience pushes public and private institutions to cooperate and to jointly find creative solutions to face adversities. In this light, further investigation into the interaction of public and private resilience becomes pivotal, including the role of the public sector in fostering resilience in private organizations, local communities, and policy fields. Similarly, understanding how the private sector stimulates resilience in public institutions, communities, or in lobbying efforts is a critical avenue of inquiry. The connection between public sector resilience, or its absence, and democratic resilience defined as “the ability of a political regime to prevent or react to challenges without losing its democratic character” (Merkel & Lührmann, 2021: 872), is an emerging research topic, offering insights into how creative processes shape and contribute to both normative and empirical aspects of resilience construction. This sub-theme invites both theoretical and empirical contributions addressing the pivotal role of creativity in fostering resilience that cuts across traditional notions of the public, private and civic sectors. https://lnkd.in/dEmpNTn7
