Served as Chargé d’Affaires, a.i., U.S. Embassy Oslo Jul-Aug 2024. Counselor for Public Engagement at U.S. Mission in Germany; former Special Envoy for Holocaust Issues. Personal Account. Opinions expressed are my own.
What an incredibly powerful and brilliant panel discussion. Concrete, practical actions one can take in the sub-national, governmental, societal, strategic, defense, humanitarian, and economic spheres to ensure what keynote speaker Sarah Ladislaw referred to as “mutually assured resilience” with respect to climate and security policy. And as you can see from the panelists, moderator, and speakers from across all those sectors, the future is feminine! (Well , it works better in German, “die Zukunft ist weiblich!”) Link to @BertelsmannFoundation recording of the discussion 👇 in the comments

🌐 In the digital era, the term "disinformation" is often overused, simplifying a multifaceted issue that requires a deeper understanding. By examining historical precedents and contemporary challenges, Julia Savchenko, Policy Leader Fellow at the Florence School of Transnational Governance, provides a compelling case for a more sophisticated strategy to safeguard democratic processes in an era of widespread information warfare. Delighted to be invited to #FikerInstitute by Dubai Abulhoul for a lecture this Saturday on #minilateralism, the #Quad (#Australia, #India, #Japan, #US) and high polarity in the international system. I'll answer questions about #formality and #informality in intergovernmental organizations and what the Quad is, does, and for what purpose. The big question of "Why" the Quad exists and what it tells us about geopolitics and hegemony will also be addressed.
Join us this Saturday for a lecture by Professor Brendon J. Cannon, who will explore the rise of minilateralism as a pragmatic approach to addressing 21st-century geopolitical challenges. The lecture is part of the third volume of Fiker Institute’s Public Lecture Series, titled “Navigating Multipolar Realities” It will be hosted at Fiker Institute’s Library and is open to the public, with registration at the entrance.

I'm a massive of fan of Mariana Mazzucato's mission driven economy. This applies to the public safety and homeland security missions that I spend a lot of time working on. The IIPP's latest work MISSION CRITICAL 01 - Statecraft for the 21st century is an interesting update. https://lnkd.in/ekKuFhi7 Some great quotes straight away in Principle One - Missions should set bold, audacious goals to provide a clear purpose and direction: "- Good missions set a bold and audacious vision to inspire and rally support across society. Solutions for achieving them are not known from the outset, which focuses minds on outcomes (rather than inputs or outputs)." "- They should set a direction, but do not determine how goals are reached, leaving room for experimentation and innovation, supported by a test-and-learn culture." ..... "- The centre of government needs reform to enable the delivery of missions. Signals, incentives and changing bureaucratic routines will help focus collective energy and workforce skills on the missions." Principle three - Missions should galvanise action across sectors and across society "- Unlike prevailing methods of governance, missions provide an explicit function to mobilise multiple actors and provide an interface between the public sector, private sector and civil society."

The Truman Doctrine and the current QUAD alliance share several parallels in their historical context and strategic objectives. However, it is crucial to recognize that these parallels do not imply a direct causal link between the Truman Doctrine and the QUAD alliance. Instead, they reflect broader geopolitical trends and strategic considerations that have evolved over time.

Reviewing some abstracts tonight and thought this was interesting in regards to reading + national security…. Abstract In an era of unprecedented global challenges and complex information landscapes, the ability to read at an advanced level has emerged as a critical factor in ensuring the security and stability of democratic nations. This paper, *Reading for Our Republic*, explores the indispensable role that advanced literacy plays in safeguarding national security, promoting economic resilience, and fostering social cohesion within a republic. It argues that a well-informed and literate citizenry is the foundation of a strong democracy, capable of making informed decisions, resisting misinformation, and engaging meaningfully in civic life. The paper examines how advanced reading skills support the effectiveness of military and intelligence operations, contribute to economic innovation and competitiveness, and enhance global diplomatic efforts. Additionally, it highlights the importance of literacy in mitigating domestic threats by promoting social cohesion and reducing the appeal of extremist ideologies. By linking the act of reading to the broader framework of national security, this paper calls for a renewed focus on literacy as a strategic priority, essential for the preservation and advancement of democratic values in an increasingly complex and interconnected world.
