It is still very interesting to me how the term "critical infrastructure" or "public utility" is still not applied to food systems work and the community of practice at the levels it matters, like then table set at #COP28 global forums, as well as US national discussions at gatherings and events I see scrolling across my feed. In my opinion it is very important to approach food systems in the context of public/commons infrastructure, I was hoping that post-COVID lockdowns and supply and production chain disruptions would drive stronger and more tactically innovative on-the-ground solutions, however after the retraction of many of the funding infused into the general population and community-based organizations during the lockdowns has begun to re-illuminate the gaps and still under funded/invested solutions that could prepare us for the next pandemic and/or disaster at minimum. #FoodTank is bringing to the front a probable path, that I see is one of the only ways, to get the level of dedicated investment and help equitably supplement the large release of approved funding from the Biden/Harris Administration to USDA, NRCS, EPA, DOE, and other agencies to get farm upgrades like agrivoltaics, resource conservation, high tunnels, program and project grants, as well as addressing the history of discrimination in those agencies for people of color. Climate Goals relate directly to our food supply and as the environment around us continues to respond to our failures to take this seriously as a planet and in the halls of money/power, we will be prompted hopefully to begin a global, and local realization that food is a utility, food is infrastructure. There is NOTHING that isn't affected by food...or the lack of it. It will become more important as we lose clear air, clean water, and affordable energy, housing, etc. and we will collectively be forced to deal with our fear of making the changes necessary to remove and disable corporate/profit-only driven food solutions for gain, to a more people/human-design based shared infrastructure that places the producer on top and the investor on the bottom of the benefit.
Join us tomorrow for a critical discussion: "Transition Pathways for Food Systems Financing to Align with Climate Goals." Speakers include: Jeremy Coller, FAIRR Initiative; Mahesh Roy, Institutional Investors Group on Climate Change (IIGCC); Zitouni Ould-Dada (FAO); Ambassador Ertharin Cousin (Food Systems for the Future ); Walter Link; Merijn Dols and more. Food Tank @ the Future Economy Forum Pavilion (Blue Zone: B7, 89) in partnership with FAIRR. Lunch provided. 1:00PM-2:00PM. At COP28, it's time to transcend commitments and move into action. Food systems, responsible for 33% of global emissions, require urgent transformation. Let's recognize their vital role and demand concrete measures! 🌱💪 #COP28 #climateactionnow
COP28 - AN OPPORTUNITY TO ACCELERATE FOOD-BASED CLIMATE ACTION To read WWF’s report, go to: From Global Commitments to National Actions: WWF Food Expectations for UNFCCC COP28 https://lnkd.in/esugMRzA THE FOOD SECTOR UNITES TO DEMAND ACTION "As negotiations stalled in Sharm el-Sheikh, WWF rallied the food sector, rapidly forming a coalition of organizations across food, climate and nature to demand more productive and conclusive outcomes were delivered in Egypt. Members of the coalition have continue to work together over the past year and have aligned once again on the eve of COP28. The coalition has issued an urgent call to COP28 negotiators to integrate a food systems approach within the UNFCCC. Signed by more than 75 organizations and high-profile individuals, the open letter comes at a critical point in the drive to scale and accelerate national-level food-based climate action." #cop28 #climate #climatechange #climatecrisis #climateaction #climatesolutions #plantbaseddietss #upfs #ultraprocessedfoods #minimallyprocessedfoods #publichealth #planetaryhealth #foodpolicy #foodsystems #foodsystemtransformation #sustainablefoodsystems #foodpolicy #dietitians

📢 On 7 December, Sandra Uwera Murasa, our Global CEO - Fairtrade International, participated to Devex summit at COP28, Climate+. This summit brought together visionaries, change-makers, and thought leaders from across the globe to explore the interconnected relationship between climate change and the Sustainable Development Goals. 🌎🚀🎇 This intervention was an opportunity for us to reiterate that climate action must go hand in hand with poverty eradication. 👉 Poverty must urgently be tackled as it's closely interlinked with environmental harm. This means that: ✅ Climate programmes must meet the needs of farming communities. ✅ Climate finance must be accessible. ✅ Climate finance must fund both mitigation and adaptation measures. ✅ Trade policies must protect human rights and the environment. ✅ Fair food systems are needed for food security. As I was leaving, someone at the airport asked me whether I thought the meeting was successful. I could go many directions with that. I do think COP28 marks a milestone in prioritizing food systems for climate resilience. Language in the Global Stocktake, the Global Goal on Adaptation, and the 158 countries who signed onto the Declaration on Sustainable Agriculture, Resilient Food Systems, and Climate Action reflect a dynamic process at COP and ultimately show that while tough, countries know something more needs to be done (and that they are responding to the exponentially more well organized food community this year!). Of course real change takes place at the country level. We've got to rally behind these countries to support them in their food systems transformation, hold them accountable, and build bridges where possible. As a community, we need to also hold ourselves to a high standard - rather than add to the noise or prioritize specific agendas, maybe we can recognize that we already know a lot of the what, and can work better together on the how. Food systems transformation is a complex issue and strikes at the heart of peoples' livelihoods and identities. The systems we have (and the entrenched interests that developed with them) were built on the conditions we had. If we want to see progress in bodies like COP, we need to help simplify and bring value to the table that negotiators and other decision makers can use and make actionable. We need to unpack the real costs of transformation and be honest about how to grapple with the future's winners and losers - otherwise we will all lose.

And...the problem we are currently experiencing is that developed country programmes and Mechanisms supposedly designed to help developing nations with this important transformation are not flexible enough to shift with the shifting climate crisis...

This is a big deal. Amazing to see that food and agriculture are being highlighted as key to combatting climate change during this year's #COP28 convening. Here, the #COP28 #UAE Declaration states: "...Any path to fully achieving the long-term goals of the Paris Agreement must include agriculture and food systems...Agriculture and food systems must urgently adapt and transform in order to respond to the imperatives of climate change." When I started Food for Climate League just a few years ago, I would often hear from people: What does food have to do with climate issues? Every announcement like one from the COP community helps to elevate the importance of plant-forward diets, regenerative agriculture and wasteless systems to the forefront of the climate conversation. I am also particularly thrilled to see this language on the importance of "shifting from higher greenhouse gas-emitting practices to more sustainable production and consumption approaches, including by reducing food loss and waste and promoting sustainable aquatic blue foods," which is *exactly* what we do at Food for Climate League. **Latest from #cop28** 134 nations have signed the Leaders' Declaration on Sustainable Agriculture, Resilient Food Systems and Climate Action. 🌍Good sign up across all continents - including Australia, Brazil, China, Germany, Italy, Spain, UK, USA (amongst many many others!) These leaders have committed to: 🎯Integrate food into climate strategies and plans including National Adaptation Plans and Nationally Determined Contributions 🌳Maximise climate and environmental benefits of food systems - including shifting to sustainable production and consumption to restore nature and reduce climate impacts 🗣️Revisit and reorient food policy to enable better outcomes for nutrition, sustainability and animals 💰Scale up and increase access to public, philanthropic and private finance to adapt and transform food systems in response to climate change ⚖️Accelerate and scale evidence-based innovations including local and indigenous knowledge I'm feeling optimistic! Getting this commitment across so many countries is a huge stride ahead of where we've been. Here's to working together to help each country implement the actions that are right for their context, people and our planet. #leadersdeclaration #cop #foodsystems #food #foodpolicy

All set for Bonn! 🌐🌱 ProVeg International’s UN Advocacy team will be at the annual Bonn Climate Change Conference (SB60) starting today (June 3rd) ahead of COP29, this year’s UN Climate Summit, which takes place in Azerbaijan. Last year, COP28 marked a groundbreaking milestone for food systems: Two-thirds of the catering was plant-based, the Emirates released a Declaration on Food Systems, and Food & Agriculture was officially included in the programme. As we look forward to COP29, it is crucial that we continue to build on this progress. Our UN team has planned a series of events on protein diversification, climate finance, food production, and youth empowerment as tools for including sustainable food practices and plant-based diets into current climate strategies. The UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has already stated that transitioning to more plant-based foods is vital to tackle the climate crisis – and ProVeg will be in Bonn to ensure that food systems remain a priority for policymakers, recognising the strides we've made and the importance of further integrating sustainable food practices into current climate strategies. Stay tuned for more news from Bonn over the next two weeks! More about ProVeg’s advocacy work ➡️https://hubs.ly/Q02zcS-H0 #ProVeg #SB60 #BonnClimateChangeConference
