Anthropometrics! Humman scale dimensions. One of the first things that tells me the refinement of the architect is his dimensions. I mentor architects, and often times the first pointer to their level of understanding humman scale is the dimensions of their buildings. Vitrivius carefully laid the foundation of antropometrics, which is basically humman scale dimensioning. The inch, cubit, feet, yard, mile e.t.c These scales are related to our body parts and since buildings are designed largely with respect to hummans, it becomes pertinent to apply humman scale to design. This thinking is so deeply entrenched in the industry and so you find out that building materials are produced with humman scale in mind. Most building materials are often produced in multiples of the feet(300mm). Tiles typically come in dimensions divisible by 300mm(1foot). Boards typically come in 4feet x 8feet(1.2m x 2.4m) e.t.c. It is ancient architectural philosophy to design in dimensions that are multiples of the feet(300mm), and I usually admonish my mentees to adopt this philosophy. It helps avoid wastage in materials during construction as there will be less offcuts, for instance a ceiling that is 3.7m width would mean that one would have to purchase 4 boards for the ceiling as each boards typically come in 1.2m widths. However, if that ceiling was 3.6m, one would only need to buy 3 ceiling boards. Does a dimension difference of 100mm worth this extra cost? Except where absolutely necessary to deviate, designs should be with respect to humman scale dimensions so as to avoid waste, encourage reuse, modularity and sustainable design&construction. #sustainability #architecture #construction #vitrivius #mentor

Once we laser scan a project, our clients can order section cuts like slices at the deli counter. Or, we can bake them an entire 3D Revit cake. Either way, we only use the freshest ingredients. This is a historic 1905 residence in New England. Our architect client needed site-verified documentation with billions of measurements and 360° photos of all facets across four levels and three separate structures. Anyone who has attempted to hand measure a project like this knows it's literally impossible to get high accuracy information. Accessible friendly One of my favorite forms of residential architecture is designing to the owners’ preferred way of life. It’s a unique joy in building custom. Where is the problem? Well, with all effort given to creating a fantastic layout, this architect created structural challenges that even a 30-year concrete veteran later admitted - “Ma’am, I didn’t want to take this job.” It’s good he didn’t admit it until we succeeded, but I could see it in his eyes. When I was asked to move forward with the project, as not just the architect, but the builder, the weight of my ambitious design became an ironic professional accelerator.
