iLAuNCH Trailblazer New Frontier Technologies has developed a capability for digital twinning of #composites for high-resolution quality characterisation and high-fidelity performance simulation. CompositesWorld, the largest international publication for the advanced composite materials industry reported recently. Already underway, the #iLAuNCHTrailblazer project to develop protective nanomaterial coatings for satellite structures will benefit from this 3D technology to assure the quality and performance of the composite material in space. “The target applications are satellite structures such as struts, booms and reflectors. The primary aim of the project is the development and validation of carbon-fibre/thermoplastic composite structures for these applications with coatings that provide improved radiation shielding and resistance to atomic oxygen degradation,” said New Frontier Technologies Director and CEO, Paul Compston. “We will develop coating application methods that are compatible with our automated composites manufacturing technology to produce structures that are lightweight, to help to reduce launch costs, and have added protection once deployed in the harsh space environment.” Read the article 👇 https://lnkd.in/g2w4EfSg The Australian National University | ANU Institute for Space | InSpace | Australian Government Department of Education | #trailblazers

As a research scientist at Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG) Science and Technology Group (DTSG), Cheryl Chan is on a continuous path of learning. A lifelong space enthusiast, Cheryl commenced a PhD in optical systems on small satellites 🛰️ at the University of South Australia. This also happens to be an iLAuNCH project where Cheryl will investigate the opportunities for additive manufacturing and high-precision technologies to manufacture freeform optical components and systems that are fit to endure launch and space conditions. To expand her knowledge of space even further, Cheryl applied for and was accepted into the first Australian Milo Mission Academy for Lunar Exploration, in partnership with AROSE. “Over the 12 weeks, we had the opportunity to be inspired by experts in the field across a wide range of areas, from technical payload designs, rover designs, to NASA mission development, project management, design and analysis tools and software, and space explorations. The major assignments throughout the 12 weeks consisted of a series of reports, simulating the reviews required in the NASA mission life cycle, building up towards the Preliminary Design Review. I would highly recommend this program for anyone with an interest in the research or development for any applications in space.” #DefenceScience | The Milo Space Science Institute | Arizona State University 👉 Read more about Cheryl's journey: https://lnkd.in/gyvM-vmT

iLAuNCH is thrilled to unveil a new project in partnership with Change Climate Pty Ltd and the combined expertise of all three of the partner universities: the University of Southern Queensland, The Australian National University, and the University of South Australia. This project will explore the suitability of a bio-epoxy resin for creating sustainable and highly durable composites for aerospace applications. Change Climate Pty Ltd's ‘BYOXY Bio-Epoxy Resin’ is the world’s only bio-based epoxy resin made entirely from 100% renewable resources. This non-toxic material, a byproduct of sustainable biodiesel production, offers a more environmentally friendly option while being resistant to ultraviolet radiation, making it ideal for use in aerospace and space environments. This project will be led by Dr. Allan Manalo, Professor in Civil Engineering at UniSQ, working alongside Professor Colin Hall at UniSA’s Future Industries Institute and Eduardo Trifoni, Director of the National Space Test Facility at ANU. Our CTO, Dr. Joni Sytsma, had the pleasure of speaking at the Fast Jets and the Future event held at the Queensland Air Museum on Saturday. This annual gathering brings together aerospace enthusiasts from the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane, featuring presentations from leading aerospace organisations, including Defence, university drone and robotics clubs, and the Queensland Rocket Society. With aircraft displays spanning the past and present, the event was brought to life by a live brass band and the thrilling roar of micro gas turbine jets. Despite the rainy weather, we were thrilled to see such a great turnout of families and young aviation fans!
