Today, I had the incredible opportunity to step out of my usual HR role and step into the field with our dedicated Damage Prevention Technicians at PVS. Has the permit to work system "Gone Mad"? I have seen some strange permits over the last year, permit to scan the ground, permit for a set of steps, (heard of a permit to wear wellies)? Permits don't make the work safe, its a two person check that we have done the best we can and there is still a risk. The issue I have is, people will become desensitised to the importance of the permit to work and runs the risk of viewing it as another piece of paper. So going back to the ladders, an authorisation to work would be a better approach so there is a dividing line of risk profiles of High risk and low risk tasks. Also issuing out a permit also means the permit has to be monitored during its issue, so if a person issues quite a few of these permits (which i used to do in a previous role). A significant amount of time is needed to monitor and record the process. The best place I have ever encountered was #Drax Power plant in #Shoreham which showed people not just on how to issue, but formal training on how to receive. But what do you think?
