Remember virtual events? Those things we did back in 2020 and 2021 when we had no other option? Well, they’re still a fundraising tool and a good one at that. They offer broad accessibility and the potential for unlimited attendance, making them a valuable engagement tool. While everybody may not love virtual events, they happen more frequently than you may believe. And I’m still seeing most events down about 20% in attendance from pre-pandemic levels. How are you engaging those folks that simply no longer attend in person events? I recommend doing one type of virtual event in your annual mix. What does that look like? It can be as simple as a virtual coffee with the CEO and the board chair, sitting there talking, having a candid conversation, and taking some Q&A from your donors. But by holding these virtual activities, we are extending that option and are ensuring that accessibility to our events is continuing. Not every interaction is an ask and not every ask should be THE ASK. How about an invitation? Today, I had the privilege of engaging in a great conversation with board members of an incredible #nonprofit. A highlight was one member's passionate insight about the transformative experience of attending their programs. It was a good reminder that showcasing your program is key to inspiring engagement. He used a factory analogy to emphasize this point. To truly understand and appreciate the value of what we offer, people need to "visit the factory," not just "see the product on a shelf" (or in our case, a brochure). In the world of fundraising, it's crucial to remember that not every interaction is about making an ask - or at least, it shouldn't be. There are moments when the timing for THE ASK isn't right. Rather, the focus should be on building meaningful relationships by inviting potential supporters to experience our programs firsthand. If a picture is worth a thousand words, then an evening spent at one of your events could be worth a million... words, that is. 😉 Keep opening doors to these invaluable experiences and watch genuine connection and engagement unfold!
