SIOP Benefit # 8: Enhancing Student Engagement Engaging English Learners in the classroom requires innovative strategies that captivate their interest and facilitate active learning. The SIOP model promotes engagement through interactive and collaborative learning experiences. SIOP Strategy Highlight: Think-pair-share and cooperative learning groups are dynamic methods to enhance student interaction and engagement. Not only do these catalyze community, but they also create natural opportunities for language development. Here are a few snapshots of how it could look: In a 10th-grade English class, think-pair-share can be used during literary analysis. This allows students to discuss and refine their interpretations of texts before sharing them with the larger class. In a 3rd-grade math lesson, cooperative learning groups can solve problems together, discussing strategies and solutions, which enhances mathematical discourse and peer learning. During a 7th-grade geography session, students can work in pairs to research different countries, sharing their findings in a collaborative presentation that promotes engagement and cultural awareness. SENTENCE STRUCTURES IN INFORMATION TEXTS. How can identifying sentence level structures help you to teach information text writing more effectively and ensure there is progression across each year group? Thinking about sentences: Take a look at some examples of sentence structures that pupils in LKS2 might develop (see PDF). Top Tips: 🔺 Draw attention to different types of sentence structure that pupils might utilise in an information text. 🔺 Collect mentor sentences that pupils can use as a basis for developing their own sentences. 🔺Provide opportunities to spot different sentence structures in published texts, teacher created WAGOLLS, and examples of other pupils' writing. 🔺 Demonstrate how to deconstruct sentences and reconstruct sentences with pupils. 🔺 Ensure pupils have sufficient topic knowledge and topic vocabulary to be able to write more complex sentences. 🔺Create a series of activities to help pupils embed new sentence level skills (preferably in context) both in class and for homework. 🔺Create a year group plan which identifies the sentence structures that will be developed for each piece of writing. 🔺Provide activities for home learning to engage as 'reader as evaluator of writing' for nonfiction information texts. 🔺Ensure 'reading to learn' across the curriculum supports pupils to develop their knowledge and understanding of information texts, and helps them to develop as a writer by exposure to the genre. The Bay Area Writing Project, in partnership with UC Berkeley College Writing Programs, warmly invites English teachers and writing instructors to the inaugural Fostering Connections Conference on Friday, August 2nd, 2024, at the UC Berkeley School of Education. This event aims to bring together middle school English teachers, high school English teachers, writing instructors at the college level, composition studies scholars, and graduate students who teach writing. We are accepting presentation proposals from Bay Area English teachers and writing instructors. For this inaugural event, the theme is "Fostering Student Growth: Supporting Students, Together." I just completed another #CPD online session focusing on enhancing my skills in #teaching #AcademicWriting. My recent engagement made me understand that collaboration improves student learning. I took part in a programme that was initiated to improve students' writing skills and English language engagement. The organization introduced the Peer Writing Workshop for students in grades 8 through 11. English teachers, a curriculum coordinator, and talented senior students led the programme. Teachers shared best practices for teaching writing through professional development. The programme included peer review and collaborative writing activities in the regular curriculum. Key components of the Peer Writing Workshop included: • Students wrote in small groups on different prompts, receiving feedback. • Senior students facilitated peer review sessions, helping younger students improve their drafts. • Students worked in pairs or small groups, improving their writing and teamwork skills. • Periodic writing competitions engaged students and boosted their confidence. The results were outstanding as students' writing skills improved. This was shown by higher assessment scores and increased interest in writing. I currently tutor children K-12 on a regular basis, and some adults occasionally. I have students of all ages, cultures, walks of life, and some that are homeschooled. I offer my first 30 minute session for free to see if I would be a good fit for you or your child/student. I tailor my sessions to the level of learning and the needs and goals of each student. I utilize a number of resources, videos, games, and other innovate ways to make the sessions the most beneficial (Don't worry, we will discuss all of these and you will have ultimate approval and choice regarding what tools we will utilize.) I can tutor virtually across the country through the Superprof platform which allows virtual sessions to be held on their software or we can utilize Zoom. Superprof allows electronic payments through their site, but, I also accept Zelle, Paypal, Venmo, or Cash. If you are within 20 miles of the Statesville, NC area, I do offer in person sessions for a flat rate travel fee. If you are further than 20 miles, I can still accommodate, but travel fee would be based on distance.
