These catastrophic injuries can occur in an instant, leaving survivors with long-term health challenges. As we navigate our daily commutes, it’s crucial to remember that road safety isn’t just about avoiding accidents—it’s about safeguarding our futures. Here are some key reminders: 1. Share the Road with Heavy Vehicles: Last year, 1,272 lives were lost in crashes on Australia’s roads, with 187 involving heavy vehicles. When driving near trucks, give them extra space and avoid lingering in their blind spots. 2. Know the Warning Signs of Unsafe Driving: Whether you’re behind the wheel or a passenger, recognise signs like speeding, poor decision-making, and drifting across lanes. These behaviours can lead to life-changing consequences. 3. Seek Medical Clearance After a Brain Injury: If you’ve experienced a traumatic brain injury, consult your doctor before returning to driving or consider a driving assessment with a trained OT. Brain injuries can impact crucial skills needed for safe driving, such as concentration, memory, and reaction time. Remember, every journey matters.
