This is first of 4.5 dozen sugar cookies, embossed with my little Swiss mama's baking tools she used when I was a child. Christmas baking is a fond tradition; throw on some Mahalia Jackson and get those ingredients out. My mother would bake her breads for friends in Midland then deliver it to their homes. Most people in Midland, Texas purchased their breads at the store, so my mom's gift was treasured. Our holiday family baking tradition is nissua (sometimes called pulla), a Finnish coffee bread. It is braided, and festive looking, has a soft texture, similar to challa, and is flavored with cardamom. Our family shares a loaf of nissua with some citrus fruit and fresh coffee on Christmas morning.
Thanks for Sharing, Ilona!
We still make Xmas pudding in October using my nans recipe where we all stir and make a wish. We also have a toast at 9pm GMT on Xmas night to absent family and friends. This tradition was started by my great grandfather in the last war when all the family was dispersed. For me Christmas starts with candlelit midnight mass in our local church which dates back to 1391.
