The Asian Legal Network supports Te Hunga Rōia Māori o Aotearoa’s (THRMOA) stance in strongly opposing the Government’s proposal to cut legal aid funding for s 27 reports. These reports help sentencing Judges to understand a person’s culture, impacts of colonisation and the role of social, cultural or economic deprivation in that person’s offending. We reiterate and support THRMOA’s view that Māori will be disproportionately affected by this proposal, and that the Government is obliged under Te Tiriti to fund these reports. Cultural reports are also used by Asian communities. It is important that people of all backgrounds - especially if they require legal aid - are supported to have their cultural and social background taken into account by sentencing Judges where relevant to the offending. Please share this to your networks.
THRMOA is strongly opposed to the Government's proposal to cut legal aid funding for s 27 reports, which provides sentencing Judges with background information and insight into a person's culture and the impact of colonisation. We know Māori suffer disproportionately in the criminal justice system. Read this below and share to your networks. We need to draw attention to this. Look out for future pānui about how we can address this collectively.

The result if implemented of this new government's proposal will be more Māori in jail. Whether that is the intention or not may be another discussion, but it *will* be the result. Where is the cost analysis of all the extra jail time this minor 'cost cut' will cause? Where will that funding come from? By cutting yet another service? There is no way to quantify the social cost of ruined lives. Blinkered thinking coming from somewhere;

Seeking Compassionate Criminal Lawyers to Join Our Mission We are an organisation dedicated to helping survivors of institutional child abuse across Australia. Many of the survivors we support are currently in the prison system, battling substance abuse as a means of self-medicating after enduring horrific experiences in their pasts. Like my business partner and I, my father also faced such challenges. We already have a few dedicated criminal lawyers on our panel, but we need more. We predominantly work in New South Wales, South Australia, Victoria, and Tasmania, and our clients often rely on legal aid due to financial hardships. We seek compassionate, communicative criminal lawyers committed to making a difference. We want to hear from you if you are passionate about providing justice and support to those who need it most. Please tag a criminal lawyer or send this post to a colleague who might be interested. Join us in our mission to bring justice and healing to survivors. Contact us to learn more about how you can get involved. We will be in Victoria from August 5 to 9. Make sure to reach out if you want to have a yarn or catch up 💪. #CriminalLaw #CriminalDefense #CriminalJustice #LawyersOfLinkedIn #LegalCommunity #DefenseAttorney #LegalPractice #LawFirm #JusticeForAll #LegalProfession #LawyerLife #LawAndOrder #Courtroom #LegalAdvice #LawyerUp

CYFA works to change systems. Our Youth Peer Court (YPC) is part of the solution by removing entry points into the juvenile legal system through pre-charge youth diversion based in restorative justice. CYFA's restorative framework allows young people who have engaged in wrongdoing to have community-based opportunities to take actionable accountability for the harm they have caused and avoid system involvement. https://lnkd.in/eQkVQMRm

Chief Change Maker - About Time for Justice ⚖️ Lived Experience - Institutional Child Abuse & Incarceration ⛓️ Advocate Law Student
Today was the first official day of trimester two of my legal studies. I am studying LAW157 Alternative Dispute Resolution ⚖️. As soon as I opened my study desk, I had to go to good old Google within the first paragraph to understand the words I did not understand. It reminded me of a conversation last week at the Reintegration Puzzle Conference, where I spoke in front of a 100+ crowd. - The day before the conference started, we had a pre-conference workshop with our lived jail experience legends. Towards the end of the session, a few of us were sitting around talking about studying, and they told me they wanted to see me win and get my bachelor of law. I wanted to thank them for encouraging me because studying for me does not come EASY, and I need that motivation. When I was sitting in jail looking at 20+ years, I never would've thought I would have a group of people from Jail who are studying or have now completed their bachelor's cheering me on. - You probably have no idea how much that meant to me, but it meant the world. Thank you for your encouragement and belief in me ❤️ Tina McPhee Tina Lucas-Smith Lukas Carey Dwayne A. When children find themselves caught in the criminal justice system, early intervention can make all the difference. By offering therapy, counseling and guidance, we can help steer them onto a more positive path and break the cycle of recidivism. Investing in their rehabilitation and support from the start not only addresses underlying issues but also significantly reduces the likelihood of reoffending. In fact, with the right approach, 9 out of 10 youth won't recommit. Join me in transforming young lives and building brighter futures. 💪 Related Topics: lawyer in California criminal defense lawyer California attorney juvenile delinquency legal help legal advice criminal defense attorney #lawfirm #lawyers #legaladvice #legalservices #criminaldefense #attorneys #californiacoast #prison #prisoner #jail #incarceration #incarcerated #convictions #juvenile #juveniles
