Many seemed to feel entitled to a "five-finger-discount," especially if they paid for some of their merchandise, or just for entering our store. The problem is definitely societal and systemic, and will require solutions which change attitudes and behaviors, with significant and immediate consequences for being dishonest, and tangible incentives and recognition for always choosing the path of honesty and integrity. -Maceo D. Because of stepped-up enforcement, retail theft arrests in the city have nearly tripled in 2024 — already exceeding the total in 2022 and 2021 combined, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer. We applaud Mayor Parker, Philadelphia Police Department, and District Attorney Larry Krasner for this tougher stance. We cannot afford to embolden thieves while people live in fear. With retailers losing an estimated $2.7 billion to organized retail crime in 2021 alone, the detrimental effects on businesses and consumers are profound. "The Deleterious Impact Of Organized Retail Crime (ORC)" Organized Retail Crime (ORC) is the large-scale theft of retail merchandise, beyond personal use, with the intention to resell the items for financial gain, and can also include transactional fraud. It is estimated that ORC is an $100 billion problem for US retailers, annually. To help visualize the magnitude of ORC, consider that Americans consume 8 billion chickens yearly. Thus, if each of these chickens averaged a retail price of $12.50 each, in various forms (e.g. fresh, frozen. rotisserie, fried, patties, nuggets, strips, salads, soups, sandwiches, etc.), it would be as if the "ORC wolf pack" is shrinking out and reducing US retail profits by an amount comparable to all the chicken purchased and consumed by Americans yearly. ORC is truly significant, pervasive, harmful, and unacceptable! Working in the field, for the world's largest retailer, I directly encounter some of ORC's practitioners and ORC's deleterious impact regularly, including: -the danger of violence and injury to customers, employees, vendors, and bystanders, and property damage; -increased costs for merchandise, property damage, deterrence, and insurance passed on to consumers; -closure of much-needed stores, reducing the quality of life, opportunities for gainful employment, reinvestment, and philanthropy in high-shrink neighborhoods; and, -losses in sales and profits. In my opinion, much stronger consequences must be enforced from the bottom to the top of ORC rings to ameliorate this loathsome problem. Crime should not pay: our honest customers should be able to "save money and live better," and not have to suffer due to the behavior of brazen ORC practitioners and participants, and brazen shoplifters, who profit from retail theft and fraud. -Maceo D.
