It was great to chat with Retail Dive about the latest holiday hiring plans for retailers. Hiring numbers seem to be coming in slightly below those of last year, which is not surprising given the more constrained demand environment and the pressures on the bottom line. However, some caution needs to be exercised in the numbers. Macy's for example, hired 76,000 in 2021 but is only hiring 38,000 this year. Why? Because it now measures hiring by positions and not people, as it did in 2021. As two or more people may fill one holiday position, it has deflated the numbers. 🔎 Always interesting to look at the retail landscape as we head into the important Q4 shopping season. We see some retailers laying off employees for typical reasons relaiting to profitability and others who are laying off for non-typical more strategic or preemptive reasons. 📉 There are also reports that retail employment openings are falling as workers are relictant to leave their job right now making movement more challenging for job seekers. Lucid Motors, the electric vehicle manufacturer based in California, has announced a significant round of layoffs, affecting approximately 400 employees, constituting around 6% of its workforce. TikTok will start notifying employees of layoffs. The social media giant plans to axe about 1,000 workers. A hacker group known as ShinyHunters claims that it has hacked Ticketmaster and stolen personal information belonging to about 560 million customers. Walmart has ended its agreement with Capital One, the exclusive issuer of Walmart consumer credit cards. Walmart will eliminate 180 corporate roles at its Sunnyvale, Calif. office and 388 positions at its location in San Bruno, Calif. by Aug. 9. Most Walmart employees currently working remotely across the U.S., as well as those at Walmart’s offices in Dallas (1,472 positions), Atlanta, and Toronto, were asked to move to the firm’s headquarters in Bentonville, Ark., the San Francisco Bay Area, or Hoboken, N.Y. Walmart store manager pay can now reach over US$500,000 a year thanks to a redesigned compensation scheme. JX, the parent company of TJMaxx, MARSHALLS LLC, Homegoods and Sierra, announced a major worldwide expansion in the coming years. The company plans to open 1,300 new locations in the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Australia. Was so sad to hear that Walmart is going back to the office and now hiring for in-office positions only again. If there is one large company I would work for in the ecommerce space, Walmart is it. They have made TREMENDOUS progress in the space and they have begun to prove to hundreds of thousands of third-party sellers that yes, there IS another option to grow your business online. THAT'S the team that I want to be a part of. After what that other company has done to my businesses and thus my family over the past decade, I want nothing more than to join their largest competitor to help them succeed. I mean, I am at banshee stage with this desire. I am at berserker level. Fanatic level. My family and my life, though, is firmly planted here in Charlotte. Wife has a long career here. Kids go to school here. There's 0 chance I could talk the family into giving up everything and move to New Jersey or the West Coast. I believe that many companies are going to go back to 100% in-office again. Luckily, there seems to be such an overwhelming flood of qualified people for any and every job posting that the odds of a candidate and a city match are good to excellent. Personally - and I don't like to brag - I am at 0 for 31 job applications for positions I am 100% qualified for and some even overqualified for. There are at least 200 applicants to every job. I am obviously doing something incredibly wrong in my search OR the job market is much, much stranger than it seems. Don't cry for me, though. I'm really, REALLY persistent. I don't give up easily and work hard at all times. That may be a trait of my generation, which is both a blessing and a curse in the job search. Oh Walmart.....what could have been. Yesterday Macy's announced that it would close five stores and have corporate layoffs. This is bad news for the folks that got laid off, but it is not all that bad for Macy's and the  five malls that are losing Macy's. Macy's stated in 2020 that they were going to close 125 stores of their least productive locations over the next few years. Macy's has been closing a few stores a year since that announcement and these closings seem to be a continuation of that program. Based on our discussions with several of the five mall owners that are losing a Macy's in these closings, it may actually assist two of the owners in their re-development of their malls. Retail vacancies are at their lowest level in about 18 years. Retail rental rates are increasing. The amount of vacant department stores on the market has greatly decreased. So when a department store closes less than 1% of their stores, it does not have the impact on the retail market that major department store closing had in the past. https://lnkd.in/gip39jZ8

WSJ: Amazon is cutting hundreds of jobs. So are Macy’s and Wayfair. But one retail worker is still in high demand: Walmart WMT 0.13%increase; green up pointing triangle superstore manager. Walmart is giving bigger bonuses and adding stock awards to their annual pay packages, pushing the total compensation for the best ones to more than $400,000 a year. The retail giant has thousands of store managers who act as midlevel executives. Each can often oversee a store with 350 workers and $100 million in annual revenue. Many start as clerks and climb the ranks without college degrees. Store managers will now be able to earn up to $20,000 in annual stock grants and an up-to-200% bonus each year. The average base salary for a Walmart store manager is around $128,000. 

Hi Network! I made the difficult decision to resign from my role. I am excited about what the future holds and just as energized and ready to learn as day 1, but this time with 14+ years experience (in #retail, #apparel, #merchandising, #buying, and #ecommerce) and ready to find my next role that allows me to #mentor the next wave of retail! I love using #data to build compelling and engaging stories to build #trust and gain buy-in with both internal and external partners and stakeholders. I enjoy taking the customer on a journey of #discovery, giving her what she wants, when she wants it, and more importantly what she didn't even know she wanted. Creating an #assortment that the customer will look at and say, "Wow, I have to have this!" is my #passion. #Strategizing and putting the big picture together is my jam, but the thrill of finding a little nugget of information to exploit and build off of is just as intoxicating. It's important for me to #lead, not manage. I want my team to be able to run when I'm not there. I don't see this as being replaceable, I see this as me doing a damn good job utilizing strengths, putting processes in place for efficiency, and creating a space of psychological safety for the team to think strategically and take initiative. I love apparel, but am also interested in expanding my knowledge outside of this category, whether in #sports, #home, #toys or #cpg.
