Sadly, modern slavery exists and it's closer than you think. Today there are 50 million people worldwide under someone else’s exploitative control. But you can help change that. Most people equate modern slavery solely with sex trafficking, but in reality out of 50 million people in modern slavery: - 19.9m are in forced labor in private or state-run companies - 1.4m experience domestic servitude in private homes - 6.3m are in forced sexual exploitation (1.7 million are children) - 21.9m are in a forced marriage to which they have not consented Thankfully, Hope for Justice and Slave-Free Alliance is working to bring an end to modern slavery and human trafficking. Rape culture refers to the normalization and trivialization of sexual violence in society. It manifests through attitudes, behaviors, and social norms that excuse or condone sexual assault, harassment, and rape. From victim-blaming to the objectification of individuals, rape culture perpetuates a climate where sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) thrives. By trivializing or excusing instances of sexual violence, rape culture undermines the experiences and rights of survivors, perpetuating a cycle of harm. It contributes to a culture of silence and shame, making it harder for survivors to come forward and seek justice and support. Today is Blue Umbrella Day, an important occasion to raise awareness about sexual violence impacting boys and young men. We stand in solidarity with Family for Every Child in their global campaign. Unfortunately, there is a concerning lack of information globally about the sexual abuse experienced by boys and young men, as highlighted in reports by UNICEF and Miller et al. This has led some experts to argue that this issue is often overlooked and not given the attention it deserves. But there are also fewer places that men in abusive relationships can go for support and information. For men, domestic violence is more likely to involve: ▪️ Verbal abuse ▪️ Threats they will lose parenting rights ▪️ Emotional and psychological abuse 𝗘𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗲 𝗧𝗼 𝗕𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗙𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 is one of the few domestic violence support services that is gender neutral. “Why don’t you want to file a legal complaint?” The journey to justice for a survivor of sexual and gender-based violence, particularly through traditional legal pathways, is marked by several challenges, including: 👉🏽 Social stigma and a lack of trust; 👉🏽 Long-drawn, complex, mostly unfamiliar proceedings that often take away the agency of individuals; 👉🏽 Repeatedly needing to recount traumatic events in detail, with proceedings depending on survivors’ ability to describe events that they may not want to or be able to remember fully; 👉🏽 Lack of psycho-social support from a system that exacerbates trauma in the pursuit of justice.
