As a pediatrician, here are specific points regarding the importance of Makar Sankranti and kite-flying festivals in parenting: 1. Outdoor Activity: Encouraging kids to participate in kite flying promotes outdoor activities, helping them stay physically active and engage in a fun and healthy form of exercise. 2. Motor Skills Development: Kite flying involves coordination between hands and eyes. This activity can contribute to the development of fine motor skills, enhancing hand-eye coordination in children. 3. Social Interaction: Festivals like Makar Sankranti provide an opportunity for children to engage with their peers and build social skills. Kite flying often involves teamwork and cooperation, fostering positive social interactions. 4. Cultural Awareness: Celebrating Makar Sankranti introduces children to cultural traditions and values. It allows parents to share the significance of the festival, promoting cultural awareness and appreciation. 5. Patience and Persistence: Kite flying requires patience and persistence. Parents can use this occasion to teach children the value of perseverance, as they learn to handle challenges like getting the kite airborne and keeping it flying. 6. Safety Education: Parental involvement in kite flying allows for teaching children about safety measures, such as choosing appropriate locations, understanding wind conditions, and being cautious around strings. This promotes a sense of responsibility. 7. Creativity and Artistry: Designing and decorating kites encourages creativity in children. Parents can use this opportunity to nurture their child's artistic abilities and appreciation for aesthetics. 8. Family Bonding: Kite flying is often a family activity during Makar Sankranti. Participating together strengthens familial bonds, creating shared memories and enhancing the overall family experience. 9. Learning about Nature: Makar Sankranti is associated with the changing seasons. Parents can use this occasion to teach children about nature, weather patterns, and the significance of the sun's movement in relation to the festival. 10. Stress Relief: Engaging in enjoyable activities like kite flying can serve as a stress-relieving outlet for both parents and children. It provides a break from routine and allows families to unwind together. Remember to prioritize safety during kite flying, emphasizing the importance of avoiding crowded areas and using safe materials for kites. Overall, incorporating Makar Sankranti festivities into parenting enriches a child's physical, social, and cultural development. #makarsankranti #childcare #parenitingtips

National Assisted Living Week 2024 runs from Sept 8 (Grandparents Day!) to Sept 14. #NALW recognizes staff and volunteers, and celebrates the residents, of assisted living (AL) communities. It also brings awareness to AL communities and the role they play for some older adults as well as those with disabilities. AL is a great option for those that need some assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs) but do not require the amount of care provided by skilled nursing facilities such as nursing homes. In addition to helping with ADLs such as providing meals, getting dressed, or distributing medication, the AL communities I’ve visited also provide some or all of the following: •social connections •entertainment such as music or dance performances, or movie nights •pet therapy •games such as puzzles, bingo, trivia, etc •creative outlets such as painting, flower arranging, or photography •fitness classes such as yoga, tai chi, or dance fitness! 2MW holds classes for AL communities throughout the Triangle, offering between 1-4 classes per week at each location. These classes are usually seated (though we have some residents who will stand and we can do blended classes as well) and are usually 30-45 minutes long. We take out some of the highest intensity routines and the coordination challenges, focusing on keeping residents moving and having fun! But, just like all of our classes, we will cover all 7 elements—cardio, toning, flexibility, coordination, balance, agility, and memory.

Coming back after a long weekend at Kendal Calling festival to see how the riots have escalated makes this post almost seem silly, were it not for the fact that accessibility concerns happen every single day to people across the UK. Those concerns are often not heard or listened to. On Thursday we set off for Kendal Calling with my partner, their Mum and their brother and his partner. One of us has a physical disability which means they need to use a wheelchair but sometimes are able to use a stick or walk on their own. So why am I telling you this? Because the experience was, at times, horrific. I would challenge the organisers and anyone else to try and navigate this festival in a wheelchair, especially one that claim 'to ensure our site is as accessible as possible'. We noticed a few things there that they did well and a few that were honestly just silly The good: - Accessibility camping with hard ground pitches available - Accessibility entrance close to the main stage - Some accessibility platforms - Some boards down in areas for smoother access - One of the bands (big shout out to The Lottery Winners) kindly let us go on the side of the stage to watch them play as there was no other way of seeing them. Hopefully the photo below shows the joy that we felt being able to see them! The bad: - Having to walk for 15 mins to collect your entry wristband up a hill from the accessible camping as they had seperated where you collected different wristbands- not doable or realistic - Having some boards in place for wheelchair users until the last moment where it was like they had forgotten that they needed a board to get across the muddy area to the exit - Having no accessibility platform at the biggest tent there so having no way to see the acts - Closing the accessibility gate between 6.30-11.15pm every day so either having to stay all day or go a very long inaccessible way back - Having a gravel path that was so uneven that your wheelchair topples forward - Having no system for toilets on site, the queue for the accessible toilet was often longer than others and the floor of one (the only one within a 5 min walk) had feces on the floor The list does go on and on unfortunately, as one of us said 'have they actually asked a person with a disability what they need?' #disabilityinclusion #listenandlearn #kendalcalling #accessibilityforall
