In England, "wavy" brick walls, known as crinkle crankle walls (an Old English term for "zig zag"), are a fascinating architectural feature. These walls actually use fewer bricks than straight walls yet remain sturdy. A straight wall only one brick thick is prone to toppling, necessitating at least two layers of bricks and additional vertical posts for reinforcement. However, the wavy design of a crinkle crankle wall provides inherent arch support, allowing a single-brick-thick wall to stand robustly without extra reinforcement. The highlight of Zero Gipps is its Brick Inlay façade, sitting above a heritage podium, featuring locally-sourced Krause Imperial Emperor Bricks in Ghost Grey. The robust, flexibility of Brick Inlay is evident in the successful delivery of varying brick patterns across the façade: some sit flat with a slight shadow gap between them, others are laid in a stack bond and are tilted in a shiplap (sawtooth) look, while other bricks are laid in a staggered bond with the shiplap look. “We flipped the bricks so that you see the top edge of the brick, which normally has mortar on top of it, so we exposed a part of the brick that’s not normally seen, and got them to be sitting in this shiplap angle. And we have different types of bonds running down the building to create subtle patterning, so you see stacked bricks versus staggered bricks,” Beaudene.
