CONSTRUCTION: From the top Common sense says buildings are constructed from the ground up. However, Exchange Tower, in Detroit, Michigan, is the first use of the LIFTbuild approach in North America. It's a top-down construction method, in which each floor of the building - starting with the top floor - is fully assembled on the ground first and, then, lifted and fixed into place. This innovative approach is safer, because workers spend most of their time at ground level. And the method is also said to be more efficient - about 30 percent faster and up to 20 percent cheaper than conventional building methods. The fact that this 16-story project was built in Detroit is doubly meaningful. The city has struggled with population decline; some empty buildings have been demolished. "Exchange specifically is the first new construction in the central business district in the last several decades," real-estate agent Hannah Hoppough told FOX News.
