*This is a reality and not a joke!!!* How do they access ?? I came over to this rural hospital for a secondary hospital posting. I was surprised to notice that this region does not have autos or shared autos or line buses except few long distance buses!! And the villages are pretty distant from each other. The only method of connectivity is a bike or 2 wheeler. Hence when someone is ill they wait and see if they get better....most of the time by the time they reach the hospital they are really sick and they have to spend a bigger amount than it would have been at the beginning stage of illness. And even at that point they say " Doctor do what you can or we will take him back home" *At Sewabhawan, they wish to have an electric autorickshaw which can be sent free of cost to the patient's family to pick from the village and drop to the hospital.* So that they can treat early and save patient lives.. Did you know that one brain dead organ donor can save up to eight lives of people suffering from end-stage organ failures? I read a few days back that the last rites of an 8 year old were done with full state honours in Bhubaneshwar. The article spoke about how the State government had announced in February, that the last rites of those who donate their organs would be done with full state honours. Organ donation is a tough decision to make, and even tougher for a bereaved family to execute. This gesture by the state government, to recognize those who perform this brave act is heartening. I do not know if it will encourage some people to donate their organs. I do hope that more than anything, it will convey the respect that organ donors and their families deserve. India has one of the lowest organ donation rates. I believe that awareness is the key to increasing organ donations that can save lives. Government support to the cause will undoubtedly help, and initiatives like the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission, which are driving organ donation are a step in the right direction. Almost all top hospitals in India offer facilities for organ donation and many for organ transplantation. Dubai to Maharashtra: A Journey of Compassion Through Blood Donation Reflecting on my journey of blood donation, I am reminded of the transformative power of a simple act of compassion. It all began in 1999, during my time working in the UAE, when I first donated blood to a hospital in Dubai. Little did I know, that moment would redefine my understanding of blood donation and its impact on lives. The hospital was utilizing donated blood for children suffering from Thalassemia Major. Curiosity led me to inquire further, and the doctor's response opened my eyes to the broader significance of blood donation beyond emergencies. Since that enlightening moment, I have made it a yearly commitment, sometimes donating twice a year. Today, I find myself in a small village in my District Sindudurg, Maharashtra, continuing this tradition of giving. The awareness and participation of the villagers, with almost 64 people out of a population of less than 1000, is a testament to the power of collective compassion and community spirit, underscoring the community's solidarity in supporting such vital causes. As I reflect on this journey, I realize that this consistent act of compassion holds the secret to good health not just for those receiving the blood but also for the donors themselves. It is a reminder that by giving, we receive so much more in return - a sense of purpose, fulfilment, and a deep connection to humanity. "Parents are the ultimate role models for children.
