Yesterday marked Session Four of our Guiding StarsZM mentorship program, and we had the privilege of hearing from the amazing Olawande Olowoyeye on the topic of "Positioning Oneself for Career Growth and Industry Success". Throughout the session, Mr. Olowoyeye posed a seemingly simple yet thought-provoking question: "Where do you see yourself in the next five years?" This question sparked a thought-provoking discussion, and I was struck by the importance of planning ahead and thinking strategically. Mr Olowoyeye emphasized that effective planning requires setting realistic goals, identifying actionable steps, and surrounding oneself with people who add value. He reminded us that our goals must be achievable and aligned with our current circumstances. For instance, aspiring to become the CEO of a leading company in Zambia within five years may be unrealistic for a first year student. Instead, we should focus on breaking down larger goals into smaller, manageable steps. As I reflected on Mr. Olawede's words, I realized that intentional planning and strategic thinking are crucial for achieving success. By being mindful of our relationships, learning from others, and setting realistic goals, we can navigate life's challenges more effectively. I'm grateful for the insights gained from this session, and I'm committed to applying these principles in my own career journey. Cohort 2? No. I won't need another investment During one of our sessions, we were encouraged to envision our future—where we aspire to be in the years to come. For me, that vision is clear: to continue sharpening my skills, expanding my knowledge, and elevating myself professionally. Reflecting on an Incredible Mentorship Experience at MPAC I had the privilege of being mentored by Ajay Maudhoo at MPAC, an experience that has left a lasting impact on my personal and professional growth. Through our regular mentorship sessions, I gained invaluable insights into: Work-Life Balance: Strategies to manage stress, set boundaries, and avoid burnout while staying passionate about my career. Leadership: Approaches to fostering team collaboration and developing leadership qualities, even in entry-level roles. Career Development: Tips for honing communication and presentation skills, setting SMART goals, and navigating career opportunities. One of the highlights was our focus on improving my presentation style—practicing eye contact, natural body language, and engaging delivery. What does mentorship mean to you? 🤔 To me, it's about supporting others in their personal and professional growth journey, no matter how large or small that goal is. When I was paired up with Andrea Ayala through GTIA - Global Technology Industry Association's official mentorship program last year, I initially wasn't sure what value I could offer her. Andrea, a seasoned channel veteran in her own right, already had a wealth of knowledge and experiences. However, our mentorship journey turned into an accountability exercise that helped unlock a new level of experience she already possessed but just needed that small push to reach. It's been a few months since our official mentorship program wrapped, but we still keep in touch and I'm so incredibly proud of her 🫶 I believe many of us can relate to Andrea's story - life can often present obstacles as we're spinning all the plates. It's easy to express our desires and aspirations, but putting in the effort to turn those dreams or career goals into reality is a different challenge altogether. #mentorship gives us the opportunity to achieve what we're truly capable of. Earlier this week, here at Beedie School of Business at Simon Fraser University, we had the privilege of having alumna Dulguun Davaasuren connect with operations management students at the Fireside Chat: Operations Management Insights event. Dulguun shared with us her career journey on why she concentrated in operations management and emphasized the importance of soft skills in the workplace. She also highlighted that starting a new job in a new industry will always have it’s own unique challenges but over time, you will no doubt get better as you’re exposed to different learning opportunities. 🔑 Here are three takeaways that will resonate with SFU Beedie students: 💡 Adaptability: Dulguun attributes much of her success to her adaptability, a skill that is highly sought after by employers. 💡 Diverse Experiences: Embracing new challenges has been key to Dulguun’s journey.
