In the coming days, I will be exploring Botswana's corporate shift towards renewable energy and sustainability. Botswana is leading the charge in the global energy transition, with corporations playing a crucial role in driving the shift towards renewable energy. The country has set ambitious targets to increase the share of renewable energy in its energy mix, aiming for at least 15% by 2030 and 50% by 2036. Key corporate initiatives are spearheading Botswana's renewable energy revolution. The National Development Bank-NDB is supporting the Green Energy Transition for Sustainable Agriculture project, offering subsidies to small and medium-sized off-grid farmers and horticulture producers to boost production through green technology and smart farming. RMB Botswana is also backing Botswana's renewable energy plan, leveraging its expertise in structuring and financing renewable energy projects across Africa. The bank aims to form strategic partnerships with the government and investors to drive renewable energy investment. RMB Botswana actively encourages sustainable and eco-friendly practices that accelerate the adoption of ESG principles. Furthermore, the BOTSWANA POWER CORPORATION (BPC) has initiated a program to procure 100MW of solar energy, tapping into the country's abundant solar resources. Botswana holds significant untapped renewable energy potential, particularly in solar, wind, and bioenergy, which it seeks to leverage for energy security and independence. Despite challenges such as the need for substantial investment, Botswana is receiving recommendations from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) to maximize the use of renewables for sustainable socio-economic growth. The country's corporate-driven renewable energy revolution underscores its commitment to sustainable development and emissions reduction, showcasing a dedicated shift towards a cleaner, more sustainable energy future. With the surge in oil and gas applications along the South African coastline, coastal communities have been inundated with promises about the potential benefits of this extractive development. However, the information provided by the oil and gas industry in South Africa often lacks critical details about the types of jobs created, the benefits to local communities and the potential impact on the environment, particularly on the ocean. To address this, Masifundise has produced a booklet designed to empower small-scale fishing communities by providing them with the knowledge to challenge the misleading narratives surrounding job creation in the oil and gas industry. The booklet, titled 'Beneath The Waves: A Fisher’s Tale Challenging The Narratives From The Oil and Gas Industry In South Africa,' is available in English, Afrikaans, IsiXhosa, and IsiZulu. #SSF #foodsovereignty #WeCannotEatOilandGas Click here to download 👉 https://lnkd.in/dDAcU_QC

Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) has issued a call for proposals for an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for a Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) terminal at the Port of Ngqura. TNPA, in partnership with Infrastructure South Africa (ISA) and the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), seeks a service provider to ensure environmental compliance and sustainability for the terminal project. The EIA will include assessments of seismic activity, marine ecology, climate change impact, and socio-economic factors. This EIA process runs alongside negotiations for a 30-year agreement with the Strategic Fuel Fund (SFF) for the terminal's construction and operation. The Port of Ngqura's LNG terminal is one of South Africa's priority infrastructure projects, and the request for proposals closes on 30 October. The answere may be to open traditionally government roles to private participants, I think we need to acknowledge that the current model is not working. In the past it has worked for the telecom sector which has seen massive market penetration, consider what it might do for electricity? We are seeing minigrids with pay-as-you go models, borrowing from the likes of telecoms and think we'll see more progress in this space.
