I've been researching a scenario in which Major League Baseball would take over its broadcast rights; however, I wanted to figure out how many subscribers they may have on MLB.TV. There's a number speculated from 2019 and otherwise generally upward trends in overall minutes consumed each year (excluding 2020 as an example), but I haven't given up! Anyway, that quest led me to this piece from two weeks ago. If you're a marketer, I hope you're listening! - Average Attendance: Highest at this point in the season (end of April) since 2017. - National Broadcast Viewership: Up 13% or more (includes MLB Network). - Younger National Viewership: Up 30% or more (depending on the channel).

Day 19 of 2024 baseball book reviews focus on broadcasting: “Beisbol on the Air: Essays on Major League Spanish-Language Broadcasters” by Jorge Iber and Anthony R. Salazar "Play-by-Play From the Minors: Profiles of Baseball Broadcasters from Scranton to Yakima” by John Kocsis Jr. From Jaime Jarrin to Jessica Mendoza to Josh Suchon, there's lessons to learn about history, and life, from the Spanish language front to the minor-league frontier. Chapter and verse. It's as much perseverance as it is talent, as much entertainment as it fundamentals. The call of the game is important on any platform. The language of baseball isn't lost in translation, or on a transistor radio.

Sunday Night Baseball on ESPN: Through Sunday, July 7th, Sunday Night Baseball Presented by Capital One has averaged 1.62 million viewers and reached 44.8 million unique viewers across the United States. The two New York clubs (New York Yankees & New York Mets) have been featured in over a third of SNB games, leading to nearly 10% of the total reach! In fact, markets in the Northeast account for 17% of the total domestic reach (NY: 9.3%, Philadelphia: 4.6%, Boston: 2.9%). In matchups that feature a New York club, the New York market accounts for 13% of the total viewership for those games. When looking at it on a holistic level, the matchups that feature a New York club account for 45% of the total reach. Why do I share all these stats because these metrics matter. They like to say politics are local, but sports are LOCAL!! Knowing where your viewers are coming from helps broadcasters determine which matchups will drive the best audience. On the flip, advertisers have target markets, just because they are receiving 1.62 million viewers on average, are they being exposed to their target audience on a geographic-level? Don’t be afraid to look under the hood of viewership. Market level viewership across national programing helps add context and reveals the drivers behind viewership. All metrics are powered by Zoomph (And yes we already have 7/7 viewership, a program that aired less than 24 hours ago...)

The TBL (The Basketball League) @tbasketballleague and the BSL (The Basketball Super League) @basketballsuperleague are both showcase leagues, as explained by their president and founder, David Magley, @coach_mags during an insightful hour-long podcast at @transcendmediaagency . Magley shared valuable insights about the leagues’ missions and successes. Be sure to watch the full episode for the complete discussion. The podcast featured Byron Johnson (TMO), @b_johnson84 Dominique Lee (President), @dlee_6 and Darryl Hepburn (General Manager) @_dhepburn Magley highlighted how both the TBL and BSL provide platforms not just for talented players but for everyone involved in the leagues. These opportunities extend to cheerleaders, broadcasters, referees, and others. For example, cheerleaders have advanced to the NBA, broadcasters have secured positions with ESPN, and referees have moved on to the G League and NBA. A handful of players have also successfully transitioned to the NBA, and several players have transitioned to various international leagues. TBL, being a showcase league, continues to open doors for all participants to achieve their professional dreams. #adifferentleague 🇺🇸🏀🇨🇦 “Where the SPIRIT of the GAME LIVES”

NEWSWORTHY NUMBER 15.2 million Average number of viewers who watched the Los Angeles Dodgers defeat the New York Yankees 6-3 in Game 1 of the World Series on Friday, the Fall Classic’s biggest audience since 2017. The game’s viewership was 62% larger than last year’s World Series opener, a sigh of relief for broadcaster Fox, which hit even loftier numbers over the game’s final half hour: a peak of 17.8m viewers were watching around the time Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman hit a game-winning grand slam. Not counted in that tally: the millions of fans watching in Japan. Thanks to Los Angeles’ star tandem of Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Japanese viewers significantly outnumbered Americans in watching earlier rounds of the MLB postseason — extra impressive as games are broadcast in Japan’s morning hours, America holds a 3x population edge, and y’know, the league is based in the US.
