During Women's History Month, we want to highlight six female Fellows who shared their experiences learning and challenging themselves each day to become better advocates. "Before joining the Fellowship, I had no direct experience working on Special Immigrant Juvenile Status cases," 2023 Justice Fellow Melinda Nguyen said. "However, once I started, I learned the nuts and bolts quickly by helping a staff attorney edit a manual on SIJS cases... Getting practical pointers and learning from the experience of other practitioners will make me a more effective advocate for my young clients." #IJCFellows #immigrationlaw #immigrantrights

📣 Stand Firm, Speak Out! 📣 Reflecting on Neil's powerful message, we are reminded of the critical need to stand firm in our values, even when the odds seem against us. 🌟 Neil challenges us to speak out and make our voices heard. 👉 Imagine if every one of us took a moment to express our values to our representatives. The impact would be monumental! It’s time to reclaim the spaces where decisions are made and ensure our voices shape a just and moral society. 🗣️ Despite challenges, there are signs of hope. Significant strides have been made, like passing state amendments against gay marriage and growing opposition to abortion on demand. These victories show the power of persistent, principled advocacy. ✊ But the urgency is real. The cultural and political landscape is shifting rapidly, and we must act decisively to influence it. Let’s stand together, speak out, and actively participate in shaping a society that honors life, family, and moral integrity. 🌍✨ #StandFirm #SpeakOut #MoralValues #CommunityEngagement #PrincipledAdvocacy #EveryBlackLifeMatters

The newsletter from NPR's Code Switch has posted a short and important essay in response to the opinion piece that's been making the rounds alleging that NPR has lost the public's trust by being overly concerned with things like racial equity (in short, guilty of liberal bias). The Code Switch essay challenges the "just asking questions" dodge that serves to cover a great deal of anti-democratic mischief, noting Toni Morrison's point that “the very serious function of racism is distraction." How much of this "just asking questions" dodge percolates through the nonpartisan pro-democracy movement? And how much does it likewise serve as a distraction from the core work of growing an egalitarian, multiracial democracy--continually calling us to answer questions that have already been answered and to provide evidence that has long since been knowable and known? https://lnkd.in/ezFn6bpZ

For those of you who truly desire to seek truth and understanding with the issues that plague our society, I would encourage you to keep seeking. Every story, every account, every perspective rarely paints an accurate portrayal of the whole picture. We often think about it as your view and my view but what about the view from the ground up or Heaven looking down. If you are one who desire to see and understand a bigger picture than what is portrayed, take a few minutes and read this article… to the end. There are a lot of very interesting tidbits of otherwise omitted details. https://lnkd.in/eW3NEQqp

In the realm of peacebuilding and conflict transformation, navigating land disputes can be among the most challenging and complex endeavors for countries emerging from armed conflict. These disputes encompass not only questions of ownership, boundaries, and user rights but also encompass spiritual and ancestral traditions and lineages, which hold profound implications for the living. When overlaid with gender dynamics and power structures, these disputes become even more complex, requiring nuanced approaches to honor traditions while striving for justice and equality for all. Returning to Timor-Leste, where our co-founder's career began, Julia Scharinger collaborated with the American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative to support government and civil society mediators through analysis, training, and mentoring. The goal was to enhance their gender awareness and responsiveness in addressing gender and land disputes. Yesterday, the project came to a closing with a final reflection meeting. The below quotes of three mediators are a testimony to the importance of addressing the complex intersections of gender and land disputes, promoting women's land rights, strengthening their tenure security, and fostering social cohesion within families and communities.
