President at Novometrix Research | Pioneering Community Network Integration for Global Health and Environmental Solutions
🌍 Tackling Avian Influenza Together: A National Call to Action 🌍 At Novometrix, we are at the forefront of addressing one of the most pressing challenges in the agri-food sector: High Pathogenicity Avian Influenza (HPAI). With cases rising in Canada and the U.S., it's more critical than ever to implement effective outbreak response strategies. 🦠 Why It Matters: HPAI impacts both animal and human health, with reported human infections showing high mortality rates. The virus’s devastating effect on the poultry industry and its potential to mutate underscores the urgency for a coordinated response. At Novometrix, we’re leading the charge using Outbreak Response Best Practices and a Quality Management System (QMS). Our approach focuses on: Leadership: Forming and managing effective outbreak teams. Data: Gathering and analyzing key information to guide actions. Interventions: Implementing evidence-based strategies. Communication: Ensuring transparent and factual communication with all stakeholders. We urge all veterinary professionals, industry stakeholders, and government agencies to join us. Let’s collaborate to strengthen our defences against HPAI and protect our communities. As an HR executive, living and working with compassion means prioritizing the well-being of our employees, who in turn dedicate themselves to the care of our residents. Unlike my colleagues and co-workers, whose primary focus is directly on our residents—from custodians and maintenance staff to CNAs, LPNs, RNs—my focus is on the people who make our mission possible: our employees. Compassion in my role involves ensuring that our team members have the support they need to thrive, both professionally and personally. This means crafting and implementing policies and procedures that not only foster a positive work environment but also empower our staff to deliver the best possible care to our residents. By working compassionately, we create a workplace where employees feel valued, supported, and equipped to provide compassionate care. It’s about recognizing the vital role each team member plays and ensuring they have the resources and environment needed to succeed. When we care for our employees with the same dedication they show our residents, we build a stronger, more resilient organization. It’s a cycle of care that starts with us and radiates out to every individual we serve.

I encourage anyone interested in the future of pets and people to join Ellen Jefferson, DVM, Vincent Medley, and myself for this meaningful conversation. We will discuss the importance of expanding how we measure (and promote) success and impact beyond (but including) the save rate to include our broader impact on communities and people. Much like my last sentence, the issues we seek to address are complex (yet nuanced), and success will never be accurately measured by a single metric. So how should we measure success? I'm not completely sure yet, but I'd love you to join us as we talk about it!
Join us live TODAY at 5 p.m. CT for our next webinar, "Beyond the Save Rate: Integrating People into the Sheltering Equation." This discussion will focus on how the industry can address root causes and expand how we approach measuring success—featuring Dr. Ellen Jefferson, President and CEO of Austin Pets Alive!, and Cole Wakefield, Executive Director of The Good Shepherd Humane Society. After the live event, a recording will be distributed to all registrants within 3 business days. Register here: https://bit.ly/49wfHq5
