How sad! Girls in Tech, Inc. shut down shortly after Women Who Code. It's hard for every organization to get the funds and volunteers to keep sustainable, but why, lately, are those empowering women in engineering specifically being de-funded most? Thanks to Women Who Code and Girls in Tech for your work. Let's revert this bad trend with a big growth of others like AnitaB.org, Women in AI, Women In Technology (WIT), WomenTech Network, ... please tag more in the comments.

This is the second tech equality group I have seen closing their doors that support women. It was a scholarship opportunity aimed at women and minorities in technology that was pivotal in changing my career. Groups like Girls In Technology, Girls who Code, Women in Technology, Code2040, and more (https://lnkd.in/gCM2zqdh) are extremely important in cultivating interest as well as bringing opportunity to minorities. Let not let any more groups close by supporting these vital minority groups advocating for us (any/all minorities in Tech). What happens when DEI is not prioritized, pursued, and intentionally practiced? The few networks and organizations dedicated to inclusion and representation are also (consequently) impacted. This is not an issue that only affects the tech industry (although it is rampant!). The intentional attacks against DEI impact all industries, including education, healthcare, private, etc. The real question is what can WE do NOW to protect AND promote DEI?

Let's face it. The tech industry is still predominantly male-dominated. Girls in Tech is a NFP that works to close the gender gap in tech by empowering women with the skills and resources they need to succeed. “Despite 82% of venture capitalists claiming they’re prioritizing DEI practices to help underrepresented groups, 40% of women tech startup founders say investors have harassed them. A staggering 65% were propositioned for sex. Another 50% said they were told they’d get more money if they were a man.” This is disheartening and angering to read. If you feel othered don’t retreat, retreat is slow death. Lean in, and contribute. When people feel like they belong, they contribute. You can take the action to do something, to contribute in some way and that improves the feeling of belonging. #A Call to Action for the #TechCommunity ***I will always cherish the group that welcomed a woman who moved continents to a country with an unfamiliar language, surrounded her with confident and strong mentors, and helped her find the job of her dreams*** The closure of #WomenWhoCode and now today #GirlsinTech is a significant loss for the tech industry. These organisations have been instrumental in driving diversity, inclusion, and equity. Their legacies should inspire the tech community to #reflect on how we can do better support and sustain such critical movements, considering the #majorbias we have out there in tech, in data, AI, ML dev, indeed the inequality is real and about to impact us all on an even greater scale over the next 10 years. As we bid farewell to these organisations, we must remember that their missions are far from complete. The tech industry still urgently needs diverse perspectives to drive innovation and foster a healthy digital ecosystem that prioritises long-term benefits over short-term profits, ensuring a brighter future for the next generation. As #SerenaWilliams continuously highlights the broader landscape of funding for female-led initiatives has been challenging year after year. As of 2023, female-founded startups in the US received only about 2% of all venture capital funding. This stark disparity underscores the systemic issues women face in securing financial support, not just for startups, but clearly for established organisations dedicated to empowering the future of women in tech. We encourage everyone who has benefited from these communities to #continuetheirwork, support other like-minded organisations, and strive to create a tech industry where everyone can thrive - it all starts at home #empowerment. As a volunteer, and Global Communication Lead for Women at Adobe, I want to thank both organisations, the volunteers, staff, sponsors, and supporters of Women Who Code and Girls in Tech. 🚧 After the closure of Women Who Code, yet another women-focused non-profit is shutting down. These were not small organizations - both had large communities: Women Who Code most recently reported 360,000 people in its community, across 145 countries and Girls in Tech states 130,000 "women and allies" across 50 cities and 38 countries 👭 Both were focused on building a supportive environment for women in tech. 🤑 Both reported a 'lack of funding' as the reason for closing down. The Women & Girls Index reports that only 1.8% of (US) philanthropic support goes towards women's and girls' organizations. #WomenInTech #GenderEquality #philantropy
