As a #jobseeker I’ve seen more roles than not requiring 5+ years of relevant experience, a demonstrated track record of success, familiarity with the technology/space and more.. As a #TalentAcquisition professional, I know these requirements make it easier to filter out candidates that are not “qualified” on paper. It also makes for a safer play and an easier hire As far as justifying the hire if anything happens, hiring stakeholders can reference how the candidate’s experience aligned with the JD. “Onto the next one.” Simple as that Personally, I’ve never agreed with or taken this approach. I build trust with my hiring stakeholders and present them with a combination of both “qualified” and “outside of the box” candidates Some of my best hires would've never become the top performers they are today, had our teams not given them the chance Sometimes that’s all it takes - giving someone a chance

A big shout out to all my TA friends and colleagues who came before me (and before the ATS & Google), worked beside me (present & past), or is someone I was lucky enough to recruit and hire into one of the wonderful companies I have been fortunate to represent over the past (gulp) 25 years. You make this profession so much fun and fulfilling!!! I love Talent Acquisition because of the complex strategy it requires to execute a successful Talent Acquisition Program. The diversity of responsibilities includes workforce planning, technology, data analytics, labor statistics, employment branding, digital marketing, candidate experience, hiring manager experience, legal & compliance, processes and procedures, pipeline programs (university, diversity, and veteran’s), budgeting (always making miracles happen with little resources), project management, communications, research, tons of negotiations and lots and lots of networking! (I think all recruiters suffer from “I’m not enough syndrome”). The VERY BEST part of the job is when you finally get to make a GREAT JOB offer to the PERFECT CANDIDATE, who really WANTS THE JOB, and the hiring manager is THRILLED you found them, and that candidate says YES!!! While Global Talent Acquisition Day is celebrated the first Wednesday in September—I am going to celebrate it today and the rest of the week (kind of like my birthday week) by spotlighting those who work with me at ST Engineering as well as throughout my career who are as passionate and/or supportive of Talent Acquisition.
