Time for my annual Ubiversary blog! On a more personal note, I wanted to add some additional insights on leadership that I’ve further explored and refined throughout this year. For me, the biggest revelations, trends, and areas of leadership that both marked my past year and will continue to be something I’ll dive deeper into are the following:
🧠 Adaptability. In today’s landscape, being able to adapt to the ever-changing environment is crucial. An organization’s ability to do so depends on its leadership and their commitment to fostering a culture of adaptability where individuals feel empowered to try out new things, learn from mistakes, and do things differently next time – embracing change instead of being hindered by it.
👐 Psychological work safety. I’ve been delighted to see an increasing number of leaders talk about psychological safety. What I’d like to next see is a deeper understanding and consensus of psychological work safety – so how the work context impacts the feeling.
💬 Communication. As a leader, ensuring everyone is empowered to work for the same goals requires constant communication and discussion along the way. The same applies for ensuring our environment supports diverse viewpoints and perspectives – the way we interact must be collaborative and inclusive.
💡 Systemic questions require systemic solutions – and systemic leadership. We should aspire to see challenges as opportunities and lead them as such. For me, the key lies in understanding and addressing the entire system of an organization, not separate parts of it. The systems our organizations are made of are complex and dynamic, requiring us to take on a mindset for holistic and adaptive approaches in leadership as well. It requires time as well, and personally, I am happy to see where we are today!
🧭 The future is our collective responsibility. In the past year, I’ve grown especially interested in the collective responsibility leaders carry across the industry. We have the opportunity to impact and should not let it go to waste. For me, it has meant even closer collaboration with my peers than before and attending events and podcasts to create visibility around topics important to me as a leader, like culture and psychological work safety.
