What effect do investments have on people's well-being? How does the environment factor in? These considerations transcend the political moment and get to the core of who we are, what we must do to provide for our families, and what legacy we leave our kids.
Accounting and finance help us discern what value is created or lost by our investments. But historically they have ignored evidence about how our money affects the wellbeing of those who aren't legal parties to the transaction, or under other formal contract. In the old days, the social contract was enough for those with power– and those without power frankly didn't matter to those with it, and were ignored.
That has shifted as the world has become more prosperous and stable. It could shift back particularly as climate change accelerates, if we don't bake it into the way we do business.
In our globalized economy, where we will never see the vast majority of people and places affected by the way we drive our money, we need reliable information built on reasonable systems and sound principles to power our decisions. Enter impact valuation, and this training.
Will it ever be as easy to tell how "well" the people who worked in the supply chain were left due to a certain product's production as it is to tell that you just handed me $9 for that dozen eggs? No. Can we get directionally correct information about whether all of the people (and chickens) who brought those eggs to market got a share of the value created that makes it possible for them to live a decent life, without incurring unreasonable risk to themselves or the community? Yes. Do you care? That's your decision.
