Glad to be contributing to this comprehensive view of what it will take to improve urban health. We must fix the environments and systems that produce bad health, not try 'fix' the people or families who live in them. 7.4 million people in the UK feel heavily burdened by domestic bills and credit commitments. This financial strain has profound impacts on the physical and mental health of working age adults. Addressing this stark reality will require bold, comprehensive action on multiple levels. https://lnkd.in/dWeFJw-9

🏚👵 Adapted Homes - Empowered Lives 👴🏚 (link in description) The homes we live in are a crucial determinant of our well-being, health, and happiness. As we age, our needs change and so must our homes. People are living longer, but many are doing so with reduced mobility and multiple long-term conditions. Yet, the vast majority of the homes we have built are not suitable for the later stages of our lives. Fitting aids and adaptations into homes is a cost-effective way to meet the needs of an aging and changing population. https://lnkd.in/edG5uJ-J

An audit of transportation plans in Montana’s 10 most populous counties shows that while many include health-related guidance, only those with a Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) measure community health impacts. This demonstrates that Montana communities are interested in the impacts of transportation decisions on public health and have an opportunity to further improve decision making by tracking physical and mental well-being over time. We need a fundamental reset of what decent housing looks like in the 21st century (that we even need to make such a statement today demonstrates how deep this crisis is). Time a moment to reflect on the number - 3.7 million homes did not meet the decent homes standard in 2021. That means family lives blighted, livelihoods hampered, children's futures shaped by poor housing. We believe it can be different. Our homes are the foundation of our lives. 3.7 million homes in England failed to meet the decent homes standard in 2021. For millions of people, this means their homes – which should be places of comfort and safety – are instead putting their physical and mental health at risk. We think this can and must change. Addressing health inequalities must be central to housing policy – that’s why it’s one of our five recommendations for a fairer housing system. Read our latest blog to find out how we believe tackling health inequalities can become a core focus of housing policy – with the Town and Country Planning Association (TCPA)'s Healthy Homes Principles playing a key role: https://lnkd.in/eb5GDbgq

Next week, I will be speaking at the Alliance for Peacebuilding conference PeaceCon 2024 in DC. I will be speaking about how we can be creative about measuring "peace" in a setting, since there is no standard definition or measure. I will discuss how peace and health have come to be intertwined and address how examination of health measures can help find gaps in peacebuilding efforts across communities. I argue that measuring specific population health outcomes should be at least part of how we measure peace in a society.
