Today is National Clean Air Day, an annual event that raises awareness about the importance of clean air for our health and the environment. Our mental health is effected by so many components some being seemingly obvious, like sleep or nutrition. Others less obvious like the quality of air around us and it's impact on our cognitive abilities. Granted the overwhelming task of taking on a worry such as air pollution in our day to day lives, for some is more than they can mentally cope with right now. That's ok. For others we might be able to make some headspace for it. So perhaps hop on your bike, find ways to support green energy and if you've REALLY got the time, engage with local authorities for policies that prioritise clean air. Most people don't realise that air pollution is the single biggest environmental health risk and we all have a part to play (though particularly businesses and governments). So next time you're clocking off, and a day off is rolling your way. Don't forget to head to some green space (preferably not in a car!) and take a deep breath. #mentalhealth #mentalhealthmatters #cleanairday2024 #airpollution

❗Addressing Seasonal Air Pollution from Wood Burners in the UK 🔥 ❇️ The increasing use of wood-burning stoves in the UK poses a significant seasonal air pollution risk. England's Chief Medical Officer, Sir Chris Whitty, warns that this trend could reverse years of progress in improving air quality. ❇️ During winter, particulate emissions from wood burning rise sharply, contributing to respiratory and cardiovascular health issues. ✅ It's crucial to raise public awareness about the environmental and health impacts of wood-burning stoves and to consider alternative heating methods to protect air quality. #WoodBurner #AirPollution #AirQuality #ClimateChange #Health

Demands for local air quality improvement, not climate change, has been at the root of the introduction of electric buses and fines for high polluting vehicles and it’s happening globally. Second hand electric cars are now cheaper than equivalent ICE cars. Together with cycling and walking, cities are reducing their emissions in the immediate interests of public health. Investment returns in these areas may have been disappointing for investors as the oil and gas industry fought fought against electrification but there really is no feasible alternative as fossil fuel reserves move closer to becoming stranded in an ocean of electric innovation.
The impact of local air pollution particulate matter concentrations is often ignored in the debate about electric vehicles. This frankly shocking BBC article about air pollution in Portsmouth and the surrounding area shows that even our area, the Isle of Wight, suffers average levels that are above the WHO limit of 5 µg/m3. Internal combustion engines are the root cause of this serious threat to health. Electric vehicles will resolve this. I took an all electric bus to visit a client in Gosport yesterday. Things are changing and we need to support that change. https://lnkd.in/ehVNgRcM

Day 30: The City That Cleared Its Air A small industrial town suffered from poor air quality due to factory emissions and vehicular pollution. Respiratory illnesses were common. Community leaders enforced stricter emission controls and promoted carpooling and cycling. In two years, air quality improved significantly, and respiratory cases dropped by 40%. Clean air isn’t just an environmental issue; it’s a health necessity. Your Step Today: -Advocate for clean energy sources. -Use public transport or carpool when possible. -Check your area’s air quality index and act accordingly. What’s one way you think individuals can reduce air pollution? #AirQuality #SustainableLiving"

''You’ll have 3 meals today You’ll have 6-8 glasses of water You’ll breathe 22,000 times - that’s 11,000 litres of air I’m sure you think about what you eat and what you drink. You may also choose what you eat and what you drink. Did you think about the air you breathed today? Did you have a choice about the air you breathed today? Many of us will hopefully never need to think about the air we breathe. But there are those who think about every single breath they take. This is an opportunity to make the invisible, visible. 🚨 Health Concerns from Underground Transport Air Pollution 🚨 Have you ever thought much about the air you breathe when you catch the metro or train? I'm assuming you have not, a lot of us take the air we breathe for granted🚆 A recent investigation reveals that air quality in Sydney's underground train stations is more than DOUBLE the safe limits ⁉ Commuters are exposed to dangerously high levels of particulate matter, raising serious health concerns. Did you know exposure to high levels of particulate matter in Sydney's underground stations can lead to severe health issues, including respiratory problems, cardiovascular diseases, and worsening of asthma 🏥. Long-term exposure increases the risk of lung cancer and can significantly impact vulnerable groups like children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing conditions. It's essential to address and mitigate these risks to ensure safe and healthy commutes for everyone as our population and transport networks continually grow 💙 Learn more about this important issue 🧠 https://lnkd.in/dM4Q5B3p.

Tonight is #CleanAirNight - a Global Action Plan initiative that shines a light on the serious health impacts of wood burning in the home. As #airpollution remains the single biggest environmental threat to human health, why introduce a source directly into the indoor air you breathe? There is mounting research that demonstrates the link between life-threatening illnesses and wood-burning smoke, which contains fine particulate matter (PM2.5) capable of passing through the blood-brain barrier. In fact, lighting fires in our homes is the largest source of fine particle air pollution in the UK. 92% of people burning wood indoors have an alternative way to heat their home, but often the allure of a 'cosy' fire is the popular choice in the miserable winter months. The uncomfortable truth is that wood burning is very harmful to the planet, your wallet and the health of everyone in your home. Visit https://lnkd.in/euHnaxHD for more information and spread the word - lets make indoor wood burning a thing of the past!

You can stop holding your breath, because the wait is over: the American Lung Association's 2024 State of the Air report has been released, and North Carolina is faring pretty well. Or, shall I say, breathing a little easier? With regard to ground level ozone pollution (think cars and trucks), from among the 30 of our 100 counties where air quality data is captured, only a handful had orange days, and none had red or purple (bad to worse) days. Particle pollution results were much the same among the 17 of 100 counties where air quality data is captured. Nothing over a code orange was reported. Congratulations to the City of Wilmington, NC for making it into the top five cleanest cities in the US! That's our good news. According to the report, in spite of improvements in cleaning up air pollution, 131.2 million people living in America "still live in places with failing grades for unhealthy levels of ozone and particle pollution." People of color were more than twice as likely as white people to live in a county with three failing grades. The air pollution in the early hours of New Year’s Day is some of the most polluted air we see all year—especially in cities. For a long time, we thought fireworks caused around 4,500 tonnes of particulate matter pollution annually. But new research shows that thanks to updated calculations and better methods, the number is closer to 2,050 tonnes. Here’s the thing: breathing in particulate matter isn’t just bad—it’s dangerous. From short-term breathing troubles to long-term health issues like heart problems, the effects are serious. And while fireworks are fun and beautiful, they leave behind more harm than we might realize. As we enter the new year, let’s find ways to celebrate responsibly and work toward cleaner, healthier air for everyone. #NewYearsAirPollution #FireworksAndHealth #CleanerAir2025 #PollutionAwareness #CelebrateResponsibly
