We are honoured to announce our partnership with Trees for the Future. Trees for the Future has a legacy stretching back to its establishment in 1989. Since its inception, it has been dedicated to empowering farmers through training them in agroforestry and sustainable land use practices. Their mission extends beyond planting trees; they also aim to empower farmers to cultivate vibrant regional economies and thriving food systems while participating in global #carbonmarkets. Trees for the Future envisions a world where farmers can forge a legacy of opportunity through sustainable land practices. In doing so, they reclaim their agency, break the cycles of climate change and generational poverty, and rebuild food systems from the ground up. As a United Nations World Restoration Flagship, Trees for the Future has garnered recognition as one of the best large-scale ecosystem restoration efforts on the planet. In the span of 2022-2023 alone, their efforts have impacted over 240,000 individuals across five countries: Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Mali, and Senegal to restore 56,000 acres of farmland and establish 41,000 forest gardens. #EastAfricaCarbonMarketsForum #EACMF2024

Happy World Bee Day 🐝🌍 In many of the communities we work with throughout East Africa, there exists a beautiful symbiotic relationship between the people and bees. Ripple Effect provides training to smallholder farmers in beekeeping, apiary management and enterprise skills in Ethiopia, Rwanda & Zambia. This allows families to generate stable incomes, while simultaneously improving local nutrition and preserving their local environment through pollination. But the benefits are not one-sided. Our projects are carefully designed to address the challenges that bees face too, like climate change, habitat loss and exposure to toxic chemicals. We do this by: · Creating agroecological solutions to food systems that protects entire ecosystems. · Employing agroforestry and natural resource management to limit impact of extreme weather. · Building diverse habitats for bees so that farms are buzzing with life. This is just one of many transformative interventions we roll out to promote sustainable development in rural East Africa. 🌱 The Power of Local Action: African Communities Leading Climate Solutions While global climate policies make headlines, remarkable African grassroots movements quietly transform landscapes and communities. In Tanzania's Usambara Mountains, local farmers have restored over 4,000 hectares of degraded land through community-led reforestation, boosting biodiversity and agricultural yields by 40% since 2019. Urban farming initiatives in Nairobi are equally inspiring. The Mazingira Institute has helped establish over 200 community gardens, producing fresh food for 3,000+ families while reducing urban heat islands and creating green spaces that absorb carbon. These gardens now serve as practical learning centers for climate-resilient agriculture. What makes these grassroots movements so effective? They combine traditional knowledge with innovative solutions, creating models that are both sustainable and scalable. In Mali, for instance, women-led agroforestry cooperatives have planted over 100,000 trees while generating stable income for local communities. These initiatives demonstrate how local action amplifies global climate efforts. While international agreements set crucial targets, community-led projects deliver immediate, tangible results. They're not just fighting climate change – they're building food security, creating jobs, and restoring ecosystems. Want to support similar initiatives? Consider: - Connecting with organizations like @GreenBelt Movement - Sharing knowledge and resources with local environmental groups - Starting community gardens in your neighborhood ⚡ What grassroots climate initiatives inspire you? Share your experiences below. #ClimateAction #Sustainability #CommunityDevelopment #Africa #ClimateResilience #SocialImpact

Davos: DRC President Felix Tshisekedi has announced the creation of one of the world’s largest protected areas, covering more than 540,000 km² (133.4 million acres) – an area the size of France. The Couloir Vert (Green Corridor) could have far-reaching implications for the country’s forests, peatlands and c. 31 million inhabitants. As a ‘community-managed protected area’, the Reserve aims to protect over 100,000 km² of primary forests and 60,000 km² of peatlands. The initiative also aims to catalyse a green economy and boost food security in DRC through agricultural transformation, microfinance and renewable energy projects, with tax and community development incentives. https://lnkd.in/d-_xqB9b.

Lost lives, displaced families, millions destroyed, hills flattened, dead marine... Whether home or away, we're all seeing and experiencing climatic and environmental changes- Floods, heatwaves, hurricanes, droughts etc. Mitigating these crises has moved from a 'they thing' to a 'me thing'. No one can no longer sit back and wait for others to take initiative to restore and conserve our environment. It's really All Hands on Deck. My personal experience? Working in the green sector has been incredibly rewarding! As the communication and fundraising officer at Ambokili Farm, I’ve had the privilege of contributing to sustainable agricultural practices, environmental conservation, biodiversity, and community development. One thing, I've always been passionate about using my skills to make a tangible impact and you should too 😉 . This journey led me to a transformative training session hosted by the Environmental Institute of Kenya (EIK) on "Remediating Heavy Metal Contamination and Water Quality Degradation – Experiential Understanding of EDL Process." While metals are useful in our bodies, excessive amounts can lead to poisoning and health issues from neurological to cardiovascular and even reproductive. This is why purifying water is very important. So the next time you enjoy a glass of water, appreciate the fact that organisations such as EIK are working to keep us safe. Especially in places like Nairobi, where rapid industrialisation can lead to increased levels of these metals in water sources. To all my fellow green warriors, your unwavering commitment and innovative solutions are making a significant difference. Keep pushing boundaries and creating lasting change! I am continually inspired by the dedication of organisations and individuals in the green space, tirelessly addressing climatic and environmental issues. They are the heroes who wear no caps. Keep driving environmental sustainability forward. #GreenSpace #EnvironmentalSustainability #WaterManagement #Sanitation #CommunicationProfessional #ClimateAction #AmbokiliFarm #EnvironmentalInstituteOfKenya #SustainableDevelopment #CommunityImpact

How do you nourish soil? This #WorldSoilDay, Re-Alliance members are reflecting on the importance of healthy, living soil and how they build soil in their work. Re-Alliance Trustee Gideon Adeyeni says, "soil is our life support system... The regeneration of our planet begins with us caring for soil." Re-Alliance member and co-founder of YICE Uganda, Winnie Tushabe acknowledges that, "a healthy soil is a habitat to many living things." YICE work with refugees across Uganda to support their needs and livelihoods through regeneration and #Permaculture design. Their Permaculture and food-forest inspired gardens help boost biodiversity, feed families and communities - and it all begins with healthy soils. How do they do it? "We practice minimal tillage to protect the soil. We practice mulching to prevent soil erosion and degradation." YICE also recently worked in partnership with Re-Alliance to trial Ecosan composting toilets in Nakivale Refugee Settlement, which creates rich humanure and nutrient-dense urine fertiliser that feeds soils, perfect for use with tree crops. YICE team member Mohammed comments, "healthy soils provide the nutrients we need to grow nutritious food, protect our water supply, and even help combat climate change." Many thanks to the wonderful network of Re-Alliance members who are deeply engaging with their ecosystems to build and nourish healthy soils every day, not just on World Soil Day. Find out more about how you can build healthy soils in humanitarian contexts on the Re-Alliance website: https://lnkd.in/g3WaNdVA #WorldSoilDay #Soils #Regeneration #Humanitarian
