The Arctic, Earth's northernmost region, is a climate regulator crucial for global stability. The reflexivity or the "albedo effect" of the sea ice regulates global temperatures. The 2023 Arctic Report Card highlights alarming warming trends, four times faster than the global average. Increased warming poses several risks including food insecurity. Human activities, particularly industrial emissions accelerate this crisis. Recommendations of the Paris Agreement and COP28 are important and must be implemented urgently. Focus on sustainable renewable energy, energy efficiency and reducing deforestation to safeguard the Arctic's delicate ecosystem is imperative. #Arctic #climatechange #socialimpact #sustainability #impactinnutshell #sustainabledevelopmentgoals

The 1.5° threshold has been considered a crucial tipping point, as severe impacts like the destruction of coral reefs, loss of Arctic sea ice, and thawing of permafrost may intensify beyond it. Have we crossed that tipping point? My insights in Down To Earth.

A paper published in the journal Nature states that the Arabian Sea will see more intense cyclones in the coming decades. “The Arabian Sea has seen an increase in the formation of cyclones from 1998 to 2021 during the post-monsoon season. Our analysis suggests that the increase in ocean and atmosphere warming and reduced vertical wind shear have led to the intensification of tropical cyclones. We propose that the recent increase and intensification of tropical cyclones over the Arabian Sea is at least partly driven by the remote connection with the rapidly warming Arctic region,” said lead author P J Vidya, scientist at NCPOR. Black carbon threatens the Arctic. Black carbon that falls on snow and ice accelerates Arctic melting and the impacts of global warming in the Arctic. Ships using heavy fuel oil emit this harmful pollutant, endangering both the fragile Arctic ecosystem and human health. Discussions are not enough, concrete action is urgently needed. Pacific Environment and the Clean Arctic Alliance propose immediate action, including mandating cleaner-burning fuels and implementing strict emission controls – a bare minimum. It's time for governments, especially those in Arctic Nations, to take decisive action to protect the Arctic and elevate the voices that depend upon it. The Arctic can’t wait, and neither can we. #ArcticProtection #ClimateAction #HolidayGivingCampaign #BlackCarbon #Arctic

Whatever an individual’s view is on the cause of global sea and general temperature rise, we can collectively agree the impact of massive ice melt in Greenland and Antarctica, sea level rise and major impact on the ecosystem balance is not good for us or our planet. These impacts will take centuries to reverse (if ever), but we must do everything in our power to slow the changes down. We all want to protect our families and their families. But if we don’t collectively act….

The 2023 NOAA Artic Report has been released. The report documents new records showing that human-caused warming of the air, ocean and land is affecting people, ecosystems and communities across the Arctic region, which is heating up faster than any other part of the world. The Arctic is increasingly warmer, less frozen, and wetter, with regional extremes in weather, climate patterns, and ecosystem responses. Centering locally and internationally-focused partnerships, long-term observations, and equitable climate solutions provides Arctic communities and nations as well as society-at-large with information and mechanisms to cope with a rapidly changing Arctic. Arctic Melt: Not a Distant Threat, but a Ticking Time Bomb! The Arctic, once a vast frozen landscape, is melting at an alarming rate. Summer sea ice has shrunk by a staggering 40% in just four decades, exposing vast stretches of dark ocean that absorb heat, accelerating warming further. This melt isn't just a visual spectacle; it disrupts ecosystems, weakens polar bears, and threatens coastal communities. Melting permafrost releases methane, a potent greenhouse gas, into the atmosphere, fueling a vicious cycle. Scientists warn of a tipping point, where the Arctic's reflective ice becomes a net heat absorber, leading to runaway warming and irreversible consequences for our planet. This isn't a distant threat; it's happening now, and urgent action is needed to curb emissions and protect the Arctic before it melts away entirely. Image Credits: Vox

Melting Arctic permafrost is a growing risk for people living in the far North, which has many potential consequences, from exacerbating climate change, to releasing pollution. Additionally, one of the most immediate and urgent risks with melting permafrost is the potential for rapid land subsidence and massive erosion, resulting in damage to critical infrastructure. Further, the Arctic and sub-Arctic are the traditional homelands to many Indigenous populations, which may bear a disproportionate risk as a direct consequence of melting permafrost. Follow the link below to learn more about the latest research on permafrost, and how its melting is impacting communities in Alaska. https://lnkd.in/gKhEcYBw
