Last week frustration in ticket booking experience for a Coldplay concert we witnessed two contrasting realities in India – one side flourishing, while other struggling for basic needs. Do music concerts only serve as entertainment and profit for artists, or are there broader economic benefits that remain untapped? 1. Concerts are consumables, People have to spend each time they go on Live concert - no matter for once or lot of time. They end up spending much more than just the ticket price for associated expenses as attendees spend locally on travel, stay, food and exploring city, contributing much more to the city’s economy even for just a few hours of entertainment. 2. Concert tours has a potential to be economic driver. For example, The Eras Tour in US generated $5 billion in consumer spending in just 6 months (Source- Nomura) 3. The govt. or Organizers should intend to make operation smoothly to make artists happy and compel them and others to come again. Example - Regulate resale as this is also a consumption The impact might be limited for services like accommodation, and transportation based on flexibility of supply in a particular city. Coldplay India Concert and What It Means for BookMyShow! Over 1.3 crore people were in the queue to book Coldplay concert tickets in India. Apart from the increasing appetite of Indians for luxury items and experiences, there is a need for a closer examination of India’s evolving concert landscape. With almost 2 lakh tickets sold across three concerts at an average price of ₹7,500 (ranging from ₹2,500 to ₹35,000), this amounts to a gross revenue of ₹150 crore. Assuming a 10% convenience fee, this translates to ₹15 crore directly contributing to the EBITDA. Furthermore, Coldplay tickets have been listed for as high as ₹3 lakh on reselling platforms. Dua Lipa, Lollapalooza, Coldplay, Diljit Dosanjh, Karan Aujla, CAS, and more are set to perform next year, with tickets being sold out within minutes. The Indian music industry is witnessing significant growth through this concert business model. Interesting article. How would lowering the VAT on Theatres across Great Britain benefit the Dance Community? The lack of dance and ballet performances in regional communities across the UK, due to the rising costs of touring, is resulting in several consequences: Cultural Disconnection: Communities feel isolated from the broader cultural narrative, limiting their exposure to diverse art forms and reducing the overall appreciation of dance. Limited Participation: Without local performances, opportunities for people to engage with dance—whether as audiences, participants, or artists—diminish, potentially stunting interest and talent development. Economic Impact: It is clearly effecting the dance economy in similar ways it is effecting the Music Industry, it is simply too expensive for any touring company to travel to venues outside of ‘the main’ cities. Local economies also miss out on the benefits that arts events bring, such as increased foot traffic to local businesses. Youth Engagement: Young people in these areas lack dance role models and inspiration, affecting their aspirations and involvement in the arts. Broader Engagement with Ballet: A lack of accessibility is only adding to a perception that ballet and dance are elitist or only for certain demographics, which alienates potential new audiences. Addressing these gaps could foster a more inclusive appreciation for dance, enrich community identities, and stimulate local economies.
