Changing the narrative around arts and humanities employability! We have some work to do.
"Finally, one of the most convincing arguments for the ongoing value of arts and humanities subjects, and the skills they confer upon graduates, is the impact of new technology such as generative AI. GenAI is likely to have profound effects on many professions and could render some that draw primarily on vocational skills obsolete. However, the transferable skills arts and humanities degrees equip their graduates with cannot be provided by technology alone." #humanities #liberalarts #careeradvice

Decision makers at higher education institutions that intend to deliver a 21st Century graduate-level education are giving time and attention to the implications, opportunities and persistence of AI generators. Institutions that want to maneuver skillfully in the 21st Century and position their graduate students/graduates to do so as well: 👉🏾 should offer, and strongly recommend to all graduate students, an AI in Society course that is interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary and available to all graduate students, regardless of the students' areas of study. 👉🏾 should investigate the role of AI in building out more inclusive and thoughtful disability services for its graduate students. 👉🏾 should investigate the role of AI in clarifying and facilitating the relationship between the disability services office and each academic program that serves graduate students. 👉🏾 must take conversations about AI beyond catching and punishing students for cheating. The implications, opportunities and persistence of AI (which operates in many spaces in ways that are not obvious) are too powerful to use cheating as the sole driver of these conversations. #artificialintelligence #graduatestudies #graduatestudent #disabilityservices

Prof. Judith Williams from Queen's University Belfast discusses how the institution is harnessing Generative AI to deliver emotionally intelligent feedback in assessment at Cadmus’ latest AI Roundtable. Overview of the approach: 🙌 The University is exploring the use of AI-augmented assessment feedback to make it more encouraging and engaging for students. 🙌 Co-designed and co-delivered with 100 psychology students, the University will be working on the project over the long term, trialling whether ‘human in the loop’ AI-augmented feedback can ease staff workloads and improve the student experience and success. 🙌 To date, the results show that students rate the quality of the feedback from the AI-augmented approach significantly higher than original feedback, noting it was nicer, far more encouraging and provided them with very clear paths for improvement. 📖📖📖📖 The next wave of AI progress relies on free-thinking innovators just as much as adept coders. Robert Gibson pens a solid, pertinent and powerful note in Medium as to why and how #liberalarts plays an more vital role in current times. 📈📈📈 Students and professionals (specifically the freshers who joined workforce) in #STEM, especially in/from engineering education, employees in GDCs/shared services do pay heed to this brilliant piece📗📗📗 Keerthika Rajaram Monica Gundam Sekhar K Data Intensity 👆👆👆 Students well-versed in philosophy, ethics, and the social sciences are better equipped to make morally informed choices as AI creators and users. They understand the historical patterns of inequity these systems could perpetuate if deployed without care. A broad liberal arts education connects the origins of ethical thought to modern quandaries. Both those building the technologies and those affected by their implementation require the nuanced moral judgment intrinsic to the liberal arts. https://lnkd.in/gU8sBmqG

Humanities students take heart. This article first published in Modern Scientist from last November provides an excellent overview of the advantages afforded by a liberal arts degree in the age of AI. Rather than being steam-rolled as is conventional wisdom in many corners, these disciplines may actually be advantageous in a climate dominated by STEM. The humanistic X-factor. Now, whether curriculum can pivot quickly enough to accommodate this shift is another question. "There are serious moral and societal concerns raised by AI. Students who have taken liberal arts courses are better prepared to make informed decisions about the responsible creation and dissemination of AI technologies."

Although it's only been a month, my first semester in the MS ACN program has been a greatly fruitful experience, I have been able to learn so much about cognitive science and how it plays a part in human-computer interaction. This was one of my first papers which allowed me to explore a topic that I was interested in, and I chose to research Emotion Recognition Technologies and how they are being applied as well as the ethicality of these practices. I was encouraged to post this research on LinkedIn to share my findings, and wanted to attach it to this post for reading convenience. I am excited to learn more about these topics as the semester continues, and am looking forward to discussing them with my peers - whether this is in the classroom or even on LinkedIn! #artificialintelligence #humancentereddesign #cognitivescience
