Board Game for Employees: How to Successfully Implement a Case It's already March, so it's time to start thinking about corporate holiday gifts again (just kidding, but not entirely). Last year, we created a unique board game - our own Semrush version of Dixit, supplemented with special tasks. Everything in our game is tailored for us: from the box design, instructions, and of course, the cards - to the board and pieces. We received positive feedback from various employees: some had a great time with friends and family, some children enjoyed the game, and others simply enjoyed examining the cards, which contain part of the company's story. How did we do it? ✅ Conducted a survey to understand if colleagues would be interested in receiving a board game as a gift ✅ Compiled the most popular answers and comments ✅ Gathered the most interesting stories, associations, and events related to our company and locations ✅ Spent a long time creating the cards and tested them with focus groups To be honest, it's one of my favorite projects. This weekend, I had the pleasure to work with two amazing game development teams for their submissions to the GMTK 2024 Game Jam! A game jam is a time-limited challenge in which game development teams create games in short amounts of time, usually with a theme revealed at the start of the jam. GMTK's jam happens to be the most important and biggest in the world. I've participated every year since 2022 as the audio supervisor, composer and/or sound designer of various small teams. This year, since the jam was twice as long (4 days vs 2 days), I decided to take part in 2 projects instead. I worked with people who use GameMaker Studio, which means the code is very similar to C++, the language I'm currently learning. The teams allowed me access to their code, and I've picked up a thing or two that for sure will come in handy in the future. I'm always thankful of people around me who push me and encourage me to do great things. The meetings were long, the discussions were stressful, the hours of work were completely bonkers. But shaping up a game is so rewarding, and when the timer runs out and you are playing the very thing you've created with other talented individuals, you can't get enough of this. Working with people all over the world, in different time zones, with different preferences and different ideas is not always easy, but it is always nurturing, and I am thankful to get to sharpen my collaboration skills. What if you provided a “how to fan” map for first-timers visiting your venue? What would you include? Imagine you’re that fan. You’re in a new city.  Schedules aligned and you’re excited to take in a game. You don’t just want to sit in the stands. You want to find “the spot” to meet a couple of supporters and hear their “remember when” stories. Maybe learn a ritual or two. You want to know what merch stand to hit for some gear or a souvenir. You want to know where to unwind postgame; you know you’ll be wired. Most fan apps have interactive maps that cover the venue. Creating a “how to fan” map with tools like PamPam City can cover the full game day experience, with fun icons to catch fans’ attention on where to go and what to do. Turn it into an engagement piece and ask fans for their recs. Or highlight sponsors and local business partners. Fans who feel like they belong will want to return. Dev Diary 19: Currently, the state of Lab 77 is as follows: - 132 of 143 bugs have been squashed. Of the remaining 11, three require further work and eight require more testing or minor fixes. - Artwork, music, sound design and voice overs are being worked on. The last few weeks of work on Lab 77 have hit a roadblock. Last time, I talked about having discovered a camera bug which seemingly did not have a good solution. I have worked more on trying to determine the cause of the bug, and I am now worried that the bug is not with the camera controller but rather the player controller. I have unfortunately not been able to determine the cause yet, but my investigations have led me to think that the root cause of both the jitter and the camera locking is to do with how the player is moved. I will investigate this further, and hopefully come back with better news in Dev Diary 20. I have also been able to do some work on the other bugs. This has largely involved re-designing levels to ensure that all levels, except for one, have the need for at least one placement. So far there has been one level, level 49, that has caused issues with this because I kept re-designing it and finding ways of completing it without any placements. I do now believe however, that I have ensured there being at least one placement in this level. Outside of Lab 77 I have yet again started another side project. This time, I have started on a management game about whisky distillation. So far I have been working on the admin side of it creating a game design document and other useful bits of documentation as well as a demo. What is this workshop truly about? How can I make a game in only a day?! When we announced the 'Make Your Board Game' one-day workshop of Kraftz, we got tons of queries from many of you. It's natural to be curious, or even skeptic about a workshop that never took place in the country before. But we're delighted to let you know that the first edition that took place this Saturday has been amazing! I walked the teams through our journey, and the models we use for building board games- to help them develop their own! With my guidance, the teams went through the game ideation and design process in 5 hours (that we usually take months for!) to develop 3 unique games that were not just fun, but also a breath of fresh air! Once the ideation and drafting were complete, each team used the gaming pieces that we provided to build the game and even created their own with 3D pens! With the first prototype ready by hour 06, each team tested their games by inviting members of other teams. Testing a game that got created in only a day felt surreal, but we made it happen! A big shout-out to all the participants for being so enthusiastic and creative beyond our comprehension. And hats off to Kolpokar for being such a great host for the event!
