Co-founder at Concert, Skilled Facilitator, Business Consultant, and Advocate for the Value of Design
One of the most important activities of the AIA national convention each year is the election of the First Vice-President/President-Elect for the next leadership cycle. This year, three members stepped up to run as candidates for the position and I want to thank them all for their commitment, courage, and passion to make a difference in our profession. This year's decision is a difficult one because of the quality of each candidate. At any other time, we would be well served by any of them. I have the privilege of knowing all three candidates well and I have witnessed their leadership in action. Last year, I served on the AIA board with Illya Azaroff, FAIA and Ryan Gann, AIA, NOMA. Both are thoughtful and bring unique leadership qualities to the position. I am proud to call Steven Lewis, FAIA, NOMAC a friend and a champion for change in our profession. This man knows what it means to be a strong leader and a passionate advocate for making architecture a profession representing ALL communities in our nation. Our profession and our association face stiff headwinds in the coming years. Difficult economic conditions have impacted every firm in the country. The economic model of architect's and architecture's value has been degraded and new technologies threaten that value even more. In many ways, it is our form of climate change that threatens the very foundation of who we are. But it is also an opportunity for the profession to define new ways of delivering value and new opportunities to show how the creativity of architecture can make a difference in the world. It is for this reason that I encourage the annual meeting delegates to support Illya Azaroff, FAIA for the First Vice-President/President-Elect. Illya has the expertise we will need in the coming years and I am confidant he understands the task at hand. I believe he can guide the institute through these changing times. I don't make this decision without remorse because I truly believe in the message that both Ryan and Steven offer as well. Again, thank you all for stepping up and choosing to offer your leadership to our profession. #leadership #resiliency #makingadifference

#1 Best Selling Author: The Lion Attitude | Action+Connection | I+M+P+A+C=T | AEC Leadership Development | Technical Sales Leadership | MEP Engineer & Energy Specialist | 3rd Gen HVAC Construction | Owners Representative
Day 2 at AHR is in the books and it was quite a day of finding ways to create as much IMPACT as I can in the AEC industry. AEC - Architecture / Engineering / Construction One of the really cool moments behind yesterday was someone approaching me at the booth that is a an internal sales person for one of our branches: "Kirby - You are the one that is writing the Lion Attitude and I have been reading all about this concept." We spent a lot of time talking about the market and their focus on selling our products in their area learning how they are doing with the ever changing landscape of the design & construction industry. And of course it was a neat moment to share my experience of writing the Lion Attitude and the origins behind it's creation. There have been many fellow industry peers yesterday that have asked about why this important project means so much to me. They shared a neat moment of the experience of going on a trip to see Lions in the wild and all their intricate behavior patterns. All the pics of them really touched me and I felt more connected to Lions than ever before. I also ran into some fellow MEP Engineers yesterday near me home area and the topic of this came right back up which is the root effect of leadership issues we have in our industry: "We can't hire enough people right now" "There is a shortage of people that want to work in our industry" The Lion Attitude was created so we can make better companies, business, & leaders in our industry. Our AEC community has to take total responsibility to build a good enough AEC community that people want to tell others to be part of it. If we want people to come to our industry we have to start learning how to be better leaders to attract what we want. So our journey keeps moving forward and it's time to take the AEC community along with me to build a better place for the future. Walk with me step by step on this journey to build something we are all proud of together....... Roaring out to all the Lions & Lionesses this morning! Rise up Lions and Fight for your Life! Intention + Motivation + Purpose + Attack + Connect = Triumph (IMPACT) #AttackAndConnect #LionPride #lionattitude Ring The Bell to Follow My Posts: 🔔

Dedicated to excellence and innovation in design and planning creating our working landscape of ecology directed toward social responsibility and stewardship, lifelong learning, sustainable and renewable environments.
As an integral element of the American Institute of Architects '24 Leadership Summit, visits to our elected Congressional leaders in the U.S. Senate and the U.S. House have been a vital part of the Leadership Summits and its Grassroots predecessor for decades. This year's visit with U.S. Representative Gabe Amo is significant as Representative Amo is the newest member of Congress, being elected to in a special election, with a large field primary, to succeed former Representative David Cicilline. As you can see in the photo with Rep. Amo, my tie was askew from taking off my name tag lanyard too quickly while going through security. Our discussions were so engaging and robust, no one noticed...or everyone was too polite to tell me I did not know how to properly wear a tie. Tie issues aside we did discuss the AIA priorities, including tax refrom on research and development tax credits, affordable housing, more efficient and effective structures for financing housing, carbon and de-carbonization. As we asked all our elected officials in our visits the question, "What can the AIA assist you with, or do for your legislation initiatives?" Representative Amo responded with a very intriguing answer which I had never heard in recent times. He said that he would like the AIA to become more involved as a voice in important issues that are not necessarily in the traditional "lanes" of architects or the AIA. I plan to follow up with him on that idea and challenge when I see him back in Rhode Island...which is 3% bigger at low tide. (that's low tide, not low tie...!) #morein24 #aia #RepresentativeGabeAmo #aiapriorities #r&dtaxcreditreform #affordablehousing #improvehousingfinancestructures #carbon #designofdesign #1•98,000•200•1

This year's visit with U.S. Senator Jack Reed of Rhode Island. Frank Mruck FAIA and I are pictured here with one of the best members of the United States Senate. Frank and I were not able to meet with Senator Reed last year as he was Chairing a meeting of the Senate Arms Services Committee, and he is a senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee. We discussed the AIA priorities and also the Senator's strong concern for housing and affordable housing. I expressed my perspective that design is not the issue, as architects have the designs, but the burdensome stacking of financial packages leads to stretching the development time and adds unnecessary costs to the cost of housing production, especially for community non-profits. To that end Senator Reed commented on the supply chain impacts for construction in general and housing in particular. Frank offered his thoughts and expertise to the Senator and his staff on the issue of carbon and de-carbonization in the construction sector and how architects and product manufacturers are approaching carbon. #morein24 #SenatorJackReed #aiapriorities #r&dtaxcreditreform #affordablehousing #housingfinancingstructure #designofdesign #1•98,000•200•1

Last week, I attended a fascinating breakfast meeting hosted by Melanie Leech, the CEO of the British Property Federation. It was an enriching experience where a small group of industry leaders gathered to discuss pressing market issues. My three key takeaways: Devolution of Planning: The new government is keen to devolve more planning and other local matters to the regions, moving some elements of decision making away from Whitehall; Planning Reform: Despite the government’s enthusiasm for planning reform, it will take time to materialise and we are unlikely to see much progress before next year; Operational Real Estate: There’s a growing importance of operational real estate. Many investors are shifting allocations from traditional assets such as offices to alternative sub-sectors like build-to-rent, healthcare, and student housing where good quality and experienced operation of the real estate assets is critical for success. Looking forward to seeing how these developments unfold and shape our industry! 🚀 #RealEstate #PropertyMarket #IndustryInsights #Leadership #PlanningReform

#1 Best Selling Author: The Lion Attitude | Action+Connection | I+M+P+A+C=T | AEC Leadership Development | Technical Sales Leadership | MEP Engineer & Energy Specialist | 3rd Gen HVAC Construction | Owners Representative
It was a great first day here in Indy and being able meet so Connect again with so many people I had not seen in a while. Being able to show off all the years of work creating the Lion Attitude had a level of excitement and energy that I felt the entire time. One thing that was consistent and clear walking thru the concept of the book and the system. Leadership in the AEC is completely broken and ineffective right now. When I shared some of the stats which has been on LinkedIn for a while about how poor we are at effective leadership there was a unanimous consensus. "I knew it was bad but 10%.......I can't believe we waste that much money every year on useless stuff" "There are so many Attackers and Con-Artist out there in our field. Something is broken and needs to be changed" "I never got any leadership training just like you mention...no wonder 70% of the workforce doesn't have purpose" The unanimous consensus was very clear among peers and colleges in our industry after so many conversations last night. "Kirby - I can't wait to get this book and this system is so easy to understand" and the most important one that kept coming up "You are going to do really well and change the lives of many people from the system/book. I think you are going to beat Baby Step 2 and be ready to do the Debt Scream in Franklin, TN" It was an energy filling day to be out in the world seeing so many people. Don't know what the future looks like but I know something is happening as a result of me being here. Let's see what that ends up looking like....Day 2 of the Summer ASHRAE Conference begins.... --- Roaring out to all the Lions & Lionesses! Rise up Lions and Fight for your Life!
