FUN FACT FRIDAY: Employees who receive weekly recognition are 153% more likely to feel valued at work than those who receive yearly recognition. - Nectar In a survey by Nectar, only 31.5% of respondents said they receive weekly recognition. Less than half said they receive feedback daily or weekly. That means that the majority of employees are only being acknowledged monthly or even yearly for their accomplishments. High fives and back pats can lose their significance if too much time passes. People want their name in lights more often and it can have a significant positive impact on the company as a whole (Iower turnover, more productivity, happier team, better mental health...). Lately a collegue came to me and said "Do you remember the farewell party we gave to our 2 leaving collegues?" I sure did. They were major contributors to the success of the company so far. She continued, "I think about the party regularly.... They had this look on their faces .... To me it felt that - for the first time - they felt appreciated for all that they had done during their time with us. That they weren't aware of how much we appreciated their contribution. Only now when they are leaving.. This is not how it should be done." This made me think. She continued, "I want to be aknowledged for what I do while I'm still here. I don't need that when I'm gone." That stuck to me. She was right. It is so obvious that you barely think about it. Feeling appreciated/valued in your workplace is known to be a major contributor to employee satisfaction. Lack of appreciation = people seeking employment elsewhere. Do we want people to leave because of that? Of course not. Do we appreciate our team members? 100%! So why don't we show them more appreciation? Because... Well... How exactly do you do that? How do you ACTUALLY make people feel appreciated? - Put their face on the wall with a banner "Employee of the month"! (Just kidding - not a fan.) - Telling them how awesome they are! - Pointing out their achievement during meetings in bigger team meetings! - Playing a game where everyone writes what they like about the person on a biiiig piece of paper on their backs.
