The first post-pandemic study on the attainment gap reveals that pupils from low-income families have fallen further behind their wealthier peers, with the exception of those in London. This widening gap is detrimental to society and significantly impacts the life chances of young people from low-income families. #education #poverty #attainmentgap https://lnkd.in/eim2WN-v

🚨 The gap in attainment between richer and poorer students is at its widest (at both primary and secondary level) since 2011. An important piece of new research by the Education Policy Institute finds that, in 2023, disadvantaged pupils were 19.2 months behind their peers by the end of secondary school. This gap has widened since 2019 (by 1.1 months), reaching its highest level since 2012. We're calling for a long-term national strategy to close the attainment gap, alongside wider efforts to reduce, and ultimately to end child poverty in the UK. Urgent action is needed by government to tackle this issue.

ICYMI: 📢American Educational Research Association recently released findings from a 26-year longitudinal study on the impact of the opportunity gap on children's futures. The study reveals that the opportunity gap is an even stronger predictor of educational attainment 🎓 and future earnings 💼 than childhood poverty alone. This underscores the urgent need to invest in initiatives that expand opportunities for low-income children —like community school models and policies that address multiple aspects of a child's environment 🏠📚. When will education just get their heads around learning has F'all to do with POVERTY as, many schools just under a tree!? Deprivation, near indoor life-styles lacking sufficient access to natural daylighting and "exclusion from participating in learning" on the other hand, has a direct and debilitating affect on children's visual acuity, wellbeing and mental health in the increasingly judgmental 21st Digital Century exacerbated by insidious levels of "approval deprivation". Regardless of age diversity we are all driven by our survival instincts presenting in fight, flight or freeze responses to a perceived or very real threat going back to hunter gatherer period in our evolution just in the urban jungle now. With 50% MORE children presenting with vision stress and binocular vision instability than in the 1960's now wonder reading fluency significantly impaired handicapping to many children yet, the 2010 Equality Act or 2018 UK Government Accessibility Regulations have yet to affect the reality of 30% plus leaving secondary education as functionally and digitally illiterate as they arrived. https://lnkd.in/ek-nZ3wZ https://lnkd.in/d_upyydp https://lnkd.in/ex5QCgVm #PublicHealth #DigitalEyeHealth #DiversityAndExclusion https://lnkd.in/eNdBVbsS

Stark regional characterise our education system when it comes to A-level results, London and the South East versus the rest of the country. These patterns reflect differing levels of child poverty, but we need to do more to understand the specific obstacles to education in different parts of the country - the south west social mobility commission is a great exemplar of the regional approach. https://lnkd.in/ep7Ud2Ef

Education plays a critical role in efforts to overcome poverty, promote good health, and expand economic opportunities. Achieving inclusive and equitable access to quality education involves more than raising awareness about the value of education – it requires shifts in social and individual perceptions, attitudes, and behaviors. We work alongside local governments, community organizations, families, and educators to identify and address social and behavioral factors that promote educational success: https://lnkd.in/gmU7C6_t #SBC #EducationForAll

Some take-aways from today's IOE - UCL's Faculty of Education and Society 'Education after the Election: Priorities for change - What matters in Education?' panel discussion —> to solve economic problems we need economic policies, not education policies —> The way for a 5 year old to get out of poverty is not to work hard at school and get an A-level so in 20 years they can earn a decent salary; this is delayed gratification gone mad —> Reducing child poverty involves: providing universal access to childcare and education in the early years (bringing back Sure Start) so children can socialise and parents can afford to work + providing families with easy access to financial advice so they can maximise the money they have.

Children in disadvantaged areas who miss school are highly likely to experience setbacks in academic achievement, potentially leading to lower educational attainment. Absence from school can also affect social and emotional development, making it crucial to address the root causes to ensure a more equitable educational experience for these children. #educationforall #education #dfe #schooleducation #attendancemeasures #pupils #schoolattendancecrisis #supportservices #poverty
