📢 Federal Government announces National Science Statement and National Science and Research Priorities AusBiotech has noted the announcement of the new National Science Statement and National Science and Research Priorities, with the updated framework reflecting Australia’s need for resilient and sustainable solutions with science and innovation at the core. The Statement lists five collective imperatives that will shape Australian science investment over the next decade. These include: ✅ Australian scientists, science institutions, and infrastructure shaping Australia’s science future; ✅ Science at the centre of Australian industry; ✅ A diverse, skilled workforce to underpin the translation of science into new industries; ✅ Embracing science to drive Australia’s regional and global interests; and ✅ A science system prepared for future challenges. #IBEC signs the Heidelberg Agreement to promote sustainability in scientific research in Europe. ▶️ #IBEC has joined organisations from nine European countries in the Heidelberg Agreement to promote environmental sustainability in the funding of scientific research. ▶️ The agreement discusses the adoption of practices that ensure environmentally sustainable research and how to move towards this model. ▶️ Teresa Sanchis, #IBEC’s Head of Strategy and co-author of the Heidelberg Agreement, hopes that this manifesto will provide the initial impetus for other European bodies to join in: 🗣️ "The bodies that legislate and fund science have the power to make a difference, not only through laws and regulations, but also by incorporating sustainability into their evaluation criteria, just as they have done with gender equality and research integrity." ✅ The next stage will be to establish an international sustainable research network, open to other interested organisations, to work on the issues raised in this document. Future meetings of the founding organisations are already planned. 📌 💬 Read more in the link in the comments!

A couple of weeks ago, several funding agencies reached the Heidelberg Agreement on #Sustainability, with the following core principles: Points of agreement 1.Funders cannot risk doing nothing. 2.Funders should set ambitious goals. 3.Funding agencies should share a set of principles towards sustainability. 4.Funders should highlight the importance of sustainability in their funding schemes. 5.Funders should support the coordinated development and adoption of education, quantification and accreditation tools. 6.Funders should involve researchers and research organizations. It's a good sign that funders will require more action from the people they give money to, and it makes it clear that it's everyone's responsibility in the life sciences industry* to engage as soon as possible on a transition to reduce the environmental impact of research. >The good news is: there are several ways to make your footprint more environmental-friendly. >>The better news is: tools exist to prioritize the actions with the highest impact**. >>>The best news is: Grenova provides both an impact forecast calculation tool (https://lnkd.in/e2T_Fj98) and a technical solution for #plastics #circularity. Don't wait: join the #SMARTER, #CLEANER, #GREENER approach and start increasing the sustainability of your important work! *or anyone working in an analytical lab, whatever the field or industry! **and don't get me wrong: all actions are important, every ton of CO2 not emitted counts, and every hundredth of Celsius or Fahrenheit degree counts!

Care to guess how many ASGCT abstracts there are this year? It's a monster number. 1908. NEARLY TWO THOUSAND. This is my favourite document to analyze each year. I'll be sharing my picks for which ones you should pay attention to in the coming weeks. Stay tuned! #cellandgenetherapy #innovation #research #biotechnology https://lnkd.in/gKRJEAYe

📢 Emerging technologies in citizen science and potential for insect monitoring - a new paper by #UFZ scientists Julie Koch Sheard, Julia von Gönner, Aletta Bonn .and colleagues The authors discuss how the current technologies have spurred an increase in citizen science projects and how the implementation of emerging technologies in citizen science may enhance scientific impact and public engagement. They show how technology can act as (i) a facilitator of current citizen science and monitoring efforts, (ii) an enabler of new research opportunities, and (iii) a transformer of science, policy and public participation, but could also become (iv) an inhibitor of participation, equity and scientific rigour.
