When giving a keynote, I usually spend a minute or two explaining what #data we´ve used to conduct our analysis. I typically say a few words about the different datasets at our disposal and briefly mention that we add ¨layers of #intelligence on top¨ of the data, such as Total Air Market ( which we affectionately call #TAM). I´m pretty sure most people immediately forget about it. What they will remember (if anything!) is the core of the analysis: the key travel trends, the outlook, etc. It´s normal, but it´s so totally unfair when I think of the incredible work done by our teams of data scientists to develop cutting-hedge algorithms. As we´re releasing a new version of TAM, now is the time to put the spotlight on their activities. Let´s start with a few mind-boggling figures: TAM analyses more data than any other algorithm in the industry — 6.9 billion passenger profiles, 4,750 airports, 900+ airlines and 40 million flights annually. The training dataset reaches back to 2014, and TAM is updated weekly — modelling historical data with 97.8% accuracy. What does TAM do? Put simply, it tells you how many people arrive at or depart from an #airport at any time. Or, if you prefer a more sophisticated explanation: ¨it is the only comprehensive, directionally segmented view of global air traffic estimation on the market. It provides complete global air traffic monitoring combining both historic and forecast traffic — including both full-service and low-cost carriers — recreating missing tickets not shared by airlines.¨ TAM is a great piece of engineering, and I´m happy to announce it now powers all our data solutions. #Kudos to the team for making it happen! After four trips—both in the US and abroad—plus some fun road trips (and delicious food), I’ve had a chance to reflect on how data shapes the travel industry... ...all thanks to my company’s awesome time-off policy ✈️ 🌍 Whether it’s analyzing booking patterns or figuring out what keeps people loyal to certain hotels, there’s so much potential to use data to make travel even better. Lately, I’ve been thinking about how companies use data to: 1. personalize trips ✨ 2. predict future trends 🔮 3. improve the customer experience 🤝 For instance, how are companies using real-time data to manage tourism in popular destinations? Or how can analytics help travel apps recommend more off-the-beaten-path experiences to better match people’s travel dreams? This isn’t exactly tied to my current day-to-day work, but I love thinking about how analytics can influence industries I’m really passionate about and want to share more of my thoughts on those topics.
