[RELINQUISHING AUTHORITY: LEADERSHIP THAT CREATES CONTINUOUS INNOVATION] In a Harvard Business Review article titled "What Makes a Great Leader?" the authors highlight a key change that leaders need to make if they want to instill a culture of innovation in their companies. They also share some valuable lessons for new or experienced managers. "When people first become managers, most believe that their power derives from their position in the hierarchy. Yet they soon discover that their direct reports, especially the most talented, don’t follow orders. And although they may think that compliance is what they want, commitment is what they need. If people aren’t committed, they won’t take the initiative or the risks required to execute or engage in even incremental innovation." The SaaS industry is fast-paced, dynamic, and ever-evolving. Continuous innovation is not a nice-to-have practice, it's a business imperative. Even though leaders understand the importance of innovation, many grapple with how to foster a culture of creativity and co-creation. One barrier is a persistent reliance on a command-and-control management style. Not only does this model stifle innovation and contribute to departmental silos, it frustrates employees. Traditional command-and-control leadership is characterized by a top-down hierarchy and adherence to formal authority. Decisions flow from management and leave little room for input from those on the front lines; individuals closest to: customers, emerging trends, and potential breakthroughs. This is even more irritating and time-wasting for employees. If one person on the sales team, for example, wants to talk and interact with an employee in product, they have to coordinate through their bosses. When leaders relinquish control, they reap the reward of diverse perspectives and teams that are inspired to collaborate and co-create. When they break down silos separating departments, information flows freely and leads to better ideas. Leaders should abandon the notion that authority equals control. By empowering their teams to experiment, learn from failure, and leverage their collective genius, they can build a business that's more innovative and agile. They'll also be creating a place where employees are excited to come to work every day!
