10 Ways to Have a Better Conversation Don't miss this TED Talk! Yesterday, I was talking about how communication is key to the success or failure of your projects, and I think this talk is just a great complement. In this video, Celeste Headlee mentions an article written by a school teacher who realizes that "conversational competence might be the most overlooked skill we fail to teach." and she talks about her 10 rules to be a good conversationalist: 1. Be present 2. Don't pontificate (enter every conversation knowing you have something to learn) 3. Use open-ended questions 4. Go with the flow (get rid of your thoughts and listen) 5. If you don't know, say that you don't know 6. Don't equate your experience with theirs 7. Try not to repeat yourself 8. Stay out of the weeds (forget the details) 9. Listen (Skill #1 to develop!) 10. Be brief What do you think? Are you a good conversationalist? Do you agree that conversational competence is the most overlooked skill?

"You need to enter every conversation assuming that you have something to learn." I listen to Celeste Headlee's TED Talk on a regular basis. Every time I watch it, I find myself agreeing with everything she says, but also remembering that I still have big room for improvement in all of the ten elements she addresses. The added bonus: I laugh out loud each time I watch it. Her talk is not only wise and moving ... her comic timing is gorgeous too. What I want to continually revisit is my ratio of talking to listening. I learn so much from my brilliant colleagues at Speexx - "everyone is an expert in something" - but I only learn from them when my mouth is shut and my ears are not. I don't want to miss out on that exceptional learning opportunity! I used to have a reminder to watch this TED Talk annually. I just changed it to quarterly. Thank you Celeste Headlee (she/her) for this brilliant content, and for keeping me on the right track to "keeping my mouth shut as often as I possibly can, keeping my mind open, and being prepared to be amazed". #LearningAndDevelopment #Listening
