First, attn vintners: Although deadline for wine submissions is officially tomorrow (06/21), you'll still be able to submit anytime before the first round of judging in mid-July. Second, if you're still wondering why this is being done: Keep in mind that the original 1976 Paris Tasting occurred when, frankly, Californians barely knew a bunghole from bâtonnage The industry has come a long way since. Many vintners have long stopped mindlessly imitating European models, despite increased appreciation. There's heightened awareness of appellations and terroirs, not to mention exponential skill level, experience and technology, although production of good and interesting wine (like any product) is a forever-and-ever process everywhere in the world. Far north of iconic wine regions like Bordeaux and Tuscany, Sweden is seeing a burgeoning industry of vineyards and a first generation of winemakers trying to carve out a niche. "There are millions of techniques, and I don't have a grandfather or grandmother to ask. So we need to figure it out ourselves," Lena Magnergard states as she walks through the short rows of grapevines at the Selaon vineyard an hour west of Stockholm. The former communications professional started the vineyard, the most northern Swedish site to have produced its own wine according to Magnergard, together with her farmer husband Erik Bjorkman in 2019 on the family farm. They made their first wine in 2021 but Magnegard, a trained sommelier, is quick to admit that as keepers of some 1,000 vines, they are still learning. "Of course, you can read up in books, but that is nothing like generational knowledge," she said, adding that they mostly look to France and its centuries of winemaking tradition as the gold standard. Old World vs New World Old World refers to countries in Europe, the Mediterranean, and some in the Middle East. This includes: France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Portugal, Austria, Greece, Lebanon, Israel, Croatia, Georgia, Romania, Hungary and Switzerland. New World refers to territories where viniculture was introduced from Europe during the colonization period, including the U.S., New Zealand, Argentina, Chile, Australia and South Africa. Old World wines are usually named after the wine producing regions themselves. Some famous examples include Bordeaux from France, Rioja from Spain, and Chianti from Italy. New World wines, however, are typically named after the main grape they’re made from. For example, Cabernet Sauvignon is made from the grape variety of the same name. You can find large cultivations of Cabernet Sauvignon in California and New Zealand. With so much negativity surrounding the Riverland, it's important to stop and reflect what the region is capable of! Some points to consider; - value for money, it is one of the most affordable horticultural regions in the world. - the ability to make high quality wines at affordable prices is second-to-none. This is a massive competitive advantage considering the cost of living pressures facing everyday Australian's (consumers are trading down). - its grape variety mix and climate is perfectly matched for the making of rosé and light 'chilled' red wines (note the Ricca Terra rosé was awarded 95/100). The attached article from Halliday lists the top 25 wines from the Riverland. I'm super proud that 64% of the wines are grown by Ricca Terra (silent noise wines, Inkwell, Other Wine Co & Small Victories). As Warren Buffett once said 'when everyone is brave be afraid. When everyone is afraid be brave'. Should we be encouraging the next batch of viticulturists and winemakers to be brave and invest in the Riverland. It's an investment we have never regretted.

Each AVA has unique geographical features, such as soil composition, elevation, and climate, that influence the characteristics of the wines produced there. ✅ To become an AVA, an area must demonstrate distinctive qualities that set it apart from surrounding regions. This can include factors like unique microclimates, soil types, and historical significance. Once approved, wines produced within an AVA can proudly display the AVA name on their labels, signifying their origin and quality. 💡 Did you know that the United States boasts over 250 AVAs across 33 states? That's right!
