While three new projects are in the works and set to launch in early 2025, I’m thrilled to share the latest updates on Studio Above&Below 's ongoing touring projects. Over the past 12 months, "Meditative Cohabitation" has been shown at 11 different public institutions across Europe (okay one more is coming up in December at ONASSIS FOUNDATION in Athens, and one in January at silent green & transmediale - art & digital culture Studios in Berlin), including prestigious Laboral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial, @Museum of Contemporary Art Zagreb, iMAL Brussels, Contemporary Istanbul Contemporary Istanbul Foundation Istanbul, Impakt Festival and Organisation Netherlands and many more. The 11th exhibition will be in Berlin in January. I will be travelling to our opening at silent green & transmediale - art & digital culture Studios for the exhibition "Unnatural Encounters" for the 9th of January 2025: https://lnkd.in/e6qJWWfD Using bioacoustics and a bespoke machine learning model, the immersive & speculatuive artwork envisions a future where screen technologies – phones, billboards, and spaces both private and public – facilitate communication with multi-species in our outdoor and indoor environments. These are hidden voices, often drowned out by human-centric design approaches and yes: noise pollution. As artists and technologists, we believe this fundamental step (including non humans, such as animals, insects, plants and many more in our design process) brings us closer to a future driven by an all-planet design approach, moving beyond the purely human-centered paradigm dominating today’s technological cultures. I truly believe that this approach involves a healing aspect, for diverse species, humans and technology itself. Last week, I had the pleasure of visiting some of Paris’ most iconic art institutions: the Petit Palais, Musée d’Orsay, Musée L’ Armée, and the Bibliothèque nationale de France (BNF). These visits highlighted just how much AI-generated images and interactive technology are transforming the museum experience. For centuries, museums have been giving us a glimpse into the past, but in 2024, the experience has evolved so much! These traditional spaces are starting to merge with the digital world and become fun and interactive for everyone. At the Petit Palais (free for everyone to visit), they blended classic artwork with AI-generated images. And in Musee L' Armee the uniforms and paintings of Napoleon where joined by video screenings to uplift the experience. What I love about these experiences is how they show the value of combining techniques from the past with innovations of the future. The art world is showing us the way forward, where innovation and tradition don’t compete, but instead coexist. AI isn’t replacing the creative process; it’s amplifying and expanding upon it. This blend of old and new creates something truly unique, giving us an experience that is richer and more engaging than ever before. In the quickly evolving digital world, this can remind us of how important it is to stay open to new ways of engaging with the past and add value to it by combining it with new techniques in art, media, journalism or business. If you’re in Paris, take some time to explore these evolving museum spaces. Or... the less touristy exhibitions, like the Gustav Moreau Museum or the AFP Photo Gallery. We are excited to share that our project DendroSonic has been selected for the UAAD Festival, joining the immersive exhibition Jukebox of Dissonance on Spatial! This exhibition brings together artworks that explore complex intersections between memory, technology, nature, and identity in today’s hyper-digitized world. Jukebox of Dissonance creates a space where the fractured landscapes of memory and culture are reimagined through neon-lit geometries, inviting viewers to navigate through glitchy terrains of digital and ecological entanglement. It’s an exhibition that asks critical questions: How do we stay connected to the textures of memory, emotion, and ecology amidst today’s fragmented realities? Drawing from real environmental data and AI technology, DendroSonic lets viewers engage with trees’ “signals”, revealing a profound, nonverbal network that crosses species boundaries and challenges our anthropocentric views. Our journey with DendroSonic began by creating photogrammetric tree models and capturing each tree’s unique “soundscape” using advanced geophones and ultra-sensitive microphones. The resulting audiovisual experience invites viewers into the rhythm of trees’ lives — a world of electrical impulses, chemical messages, and ancient ecosystems that offer a new perspective on communication beyond human language. Khristina Ots, curator of SPLACES.STUDIO, reflects on how the DendroSonic project bridges the worlds of nature and technology in today’s digital landscape: Metaverse is expanding, creating new space for artists to exhibit their work and reach a broader audience. Our project, DendroSonic, delves into the hidden connections that exist within nature, encouraging us to rethink fundamental ideas of human communication and to pay closer attention to the complex systems at play beneath our feet. Can we envision a future where technology and nature become intertwined? This question is central to our work at SPLACES.STUDIO. Who can predict the future? Perhaps only those who have been able to travel forwards and backwards in time. Something that seems rather improbable. With the social, cultural and emotional panorama of human beings today, it is difficult to unify the questions that art in any of its manifestations raises, presents and tries to answer. From the particular to the general in a globalised society according to the level of evolution of infrastructures makes us wonder if we will have to retrace our steps from the general to the particular. We live with immersive sensorial experiences where technology recreates experiences that only live in our imagination and are sometimes projected in the public space in search of different answers or emotions. As many as there are levels of assimilation and evolution. Not long ago in a meeting with secondary school teachers, we were told that there were up to 4 levels of maturity in a group. Is something mature what is integrated in its environment, what assimilates and responds according to an expected response or what transcends the environment and stands out, not following the trend?
