Book Name: Racket Boy – Where is my country?
Author: Philip George
Genre: Memoir (An emotional and motivational journey)!
In general, every memoir has its own way of penning down the thoughts, happenings, and experiences. This book has a unique way of making us feel the way George felt at that time.
The book begins with the foreword, where a rough overview of George is explained. It describes how his career journey started in the UK, then as a psychiatrist, and how he landed himself as a lawyer in the Court of England.
The first chapter begins with sharing his place of birth (Kerala), his parents and siblings, and his experience in school. One takeaway from this chapter is:
1. We can learn more from the outside world.
2. We must completely eradicate discrimination and differences.
It also describes his love and interest in being a badminton player. As a typical Indian parent, his father is against his interests. But he continuously pursued his interest. When everything went well, he was excluded from the team because of favouritism, and the team that went to play without him lost their match.
As we turn pages, we get to know the embarrassing moment of George, where he took the coin on the floor that belonged to one of his classmates (a girl). As she complained, it created a big fuss, and he got caught. That was the moment he realized that, though we were about to prove something, we should choose the right way instead of acting in haste.
The book also covers his journey to different countries and traveling on the ship. In the ship, he learned the difference between how people are divided based on their status and money. It also describes his love for Italy and his dog, who travelled along with him.
In each chapter, we get to know more about him and his struggles, which push him forward.
The book must be read with patience since it covers more information. Other than that, it is a good read with mixed emotions.
